Certainly the United States takes
no pleasure in knowing that inncvem
civilians died when the U S warship
Vincennes shot down an Iraiyan
jetliner
But we have no reason to how in
guild
The simple, although admmedl)
sad. facts are that 290 lives were km
because o f a justifiable mistake made
in the heat o f a combat engagement
in the Persian G ulf
Those fact» include
A U S Aegis cruiser was in the
process o f defending itself against an
unprovoked attack by Iranian gun
boats Simultaneously, a commercial
Iranian jetliner -one hour later than
scheduled left an airfield which is
home to Iranian fighter aircraft
It passed directly over the combat
area and. though most pilots flying
anywhere near the volatile Persian
G u lf are extremely eager to identify
themselves. Iran Air didn't respond
The captain o f the Vincennes was
faced with the choice o f launching
his defenses or risking a mivsle hit
similar to the U S S Stark which
took 38 American lives He fired
At that point, the Aegis equipment
and crews were simply doing the job
they were trained to do

Like every incident o f this kind,
there are more questions than
answers That may never change

seen so far that the military respon
sibilitics were handled properly, but
a more delicate question comes in

attacked
Americans held hostage in Tehran
for 444 days weren't compensated
by Iran
American hostages are being held
even now by Iranian paid terrorists,
without regard for their families
As a nation of people to whom fair
play is important, it's understandable
that we would feel that this terrible
accident deserves more than a xim
pie apology
Iran, however, has vividly
dcnvmsi rated its own accepted sun
dards of conducl in the past Its
leaders feel no compulsion to
acknowledge, let alone compensate
for. the willful and deliberate
murder, torture and kidnapping of
Americans
As it is. our even simple apology
is more than anyone involved in the
Persian Gulf has ever received from
Iran
The Vincennes was justified in
taking the action it did in the cir­
cumstances of that moment
Yes. this was a tragic accident
