F ■ ’ - 4 ^ ; « « - Shortly we will celebrate the Fourth of July. Independence Day Picnics, relatives and fire works This year we ll have a three day break so that will mean travel, camping and such, more than the usual mid week holiday Seems to he the older folks who call it Independence Day There's nothing like a war or two to instill that kind of sentiment It's hard to realize »hat to day’s high school graduate was horn after the Viet Nam thing and that the By f-xl (ilenn peaceniks of the 6 0 's are now middle aged W'c think that has a lot to do with the eternal erosion of independence, both individual and societal W e’re not pleased with the way our federal government seems to get bigger and bigger, state government gets bigger and bigger and even local government gets bigger and bigger. My daughter needs a permit to get a job, my son can't operate even the simplest of machines, my wife meets ever increasing requirements to leach school and I have a stack of licenses ami permits a foot high You can’t build a house on about of Morrow County and where you can. it has to he built in a particular fashion and inspected for dozens of requirements. We all pay ever inc reasing laves to pay for ever inc reasing govemnieni And laves seem to he beyond even our elected officials' ability to control We hear how big the “ mandated programs" arc am) how small the 'discre nonary budget'' is Congress can't live within a balanced budget, the Governor wants to junk the state spending limit and the county tav rate is up 24% over last year As I sec it, too many of us will use the upcoming holiday as a time to play, have fun and escape the reality of our real world Too few of us will use the occasion to renew our dedication to Independence, in dependence from not only the mother country but independence from t>p pressive and excessive government Hardly anyone will sit down and write a letter to a Senator. Congressman or County Commissioner Very few will stop the hue and cry for another law against something or another This Independence Day will pass as just another shower of sparks with little fire left in (he independent heart of man Class of ‘78 sets reunion The claw of I*47H will hold itv 10 year reunion on July 2 and ' in Heppner On July 2 there will he a social hour at the hlk's lanlge from *< to 6 p in Dinner will follow In mi 6 to /? ■ • * ' 1 ' / /V r .» ■ U — . -V ' , f .
