Shortly we will celebrate the Fourth
of July. Independence Day Picnics,
relatives and fire works This year
we ll have a three day break so that will
mean travel, camping and such, more
than the usual mid week holiday
Seems to he the older folks who call
it Independence Day There's nothing
like a war or two to instill that kind of
sentiment It's hard to realize »hat to
day’s high school graduate was horn
after the Viet Nam thing and that the
By f-xl (ilenn
peaceniks of the 6 0 's are now
middle aged
W'c think that has a lot to do with the
eternal erosion of independence, both individual and societal
W e’re not pleased with the way our federal government seems to get
bigger and bigger, state government gets bigger and bigger and even local
government gets bigger and bigger.
My daughter needs a permit to get a job, my son can't operate even
the simplest of machines, my wife meets ever increasing requirements to
leach school and I have a stack of licenses ami permits a foot high
You can’t build a house on about
of Morrow County and where
you can. it has to he built in a particular fashion and inspected for dozens
of requirements.
We all pay ever inc reasing laves to pay for ever inc reasing govemnieni
And laves seem to he beyond even our elected officials' ability to control
We hear how big the “ mandated programs" arc am) how small the 'discre
nonary budget'' is Congress can't live within a balanced budget, the
Governor wants to junk the state spending limit and the county tav rate
is up 24% over last year
As I sec it, too many of us will use the upcoming holiday as a time to
play, have fun and escape the reality of our real world Too few of us
will use the occasion to renew our dedication to Independence, in
dependence from not only the mother country but independence from t>p
pressive and excessive government Hardly anyone will sit down and write
a letter to a Senator. Congressman or County Commissioner Very few
will stop the hue and cry for another law against something or another
This Independence Day will pass as just another shower of sparks with
little fire left in (he independent heart of man

Little league season is over The
players in lone had a good season,
and playevl their last game with great
style The parents of the team
members felt confident with the
coaches, and the time these men
dedicated to the players
Dana Hcideman. with his intensi
ty and dedication to baseball and Jim
Swanson with knowledge of the
game, and easy-going personality,
complimented each other as clinches
The players know their coaches, and
Dana is the first to admit when he
loses his temper, and apologizes No
hard feelings linger Jim is quick
with praise and a pat on the hack,
and always has a “ nice try " for a
player who is feeling low
Dana was recently reprimanded by
the league for allegedly using foul
language during games As a parent,
iny husband and I attend the games,
and I have never heard the language
Dana is accused of using The only
concern I had as a parent of two of
the players was Dana's taking the
game too seriously But Dana was
working on being a more rclaved
coach He is a gi*od person, and a
w tiling coach who is giving his time
to a gn>up of youngsters unselfishly
Many of us wouldn't commit so
much time and effort to he criticiz
ed and ridiculed Little league is for
the players, and the league coaches
Response made to WCLL ruling
To the Fditor:
I led it is appropriate to respond
to some of the false accusations that
have been brought against me hy
some irresponsible people affiliated
with die W.C L L fhey have made
slanderous statements about me at a
WCLL meeting witfunit seeking the
truth first If they were going to act
on this matter it would have been
best to find out the complete truth
from people who were actually there
and witness to (he incident Instead
they accepted only one viewpoint in
which this person actually made false
accusations about what really hap
pened at the game in question. The
president of the WCLL hail little or
no control over the meeting I was
not given a chance to defend our
team or my sell None of the hoard
mcmehers at the meeting were at the
game in question cvcept my self and
yet they passed judgement to send
out a letter of reprimand solely on
the talse accusation* of one person
The letter of reprimand was issued
to me lor being removed from the
game, however I have also been ac
iused of everything from using cv

Wc want to congratulate you,
Dana Hcideman. tor the great job
you did coaching the lone Indians
I ittlc league team this year Your
team was a growing team and you
and Jim Swanson taught them all tair
and clean playing all the way
through Your players like and
respect you and so do their parents
It is a priv ilcgc to see so many of our
family so active in coaching, umpir
ing and playing in the Little league
organization
Wc arc very curious as to why the
scores and results of all (he Little
league games were not printed in
your paper ’ When the season started
the scores and standings were
printed every week hut as it pro
gressed they were completely drop-
pied I would like to hear the reason
for this.
It is a sad thing to have the season
end as it did because someone lied
tothcW C L l Board about what hap
pened at one certain game Allot us
who were actually there know what
really hapipencd Wc also know you

came up to you. Dana, after the
game and apologized to you for the
actions of the pvarty who lied about
what was said and what hapipiened at
that game Even the hatchet job dixie
on you at the board meeting was pirn
nounccd ridiculous and entirely un
called for by some of those in alien

of the hoard members should take a
lesson from nk*st of the coaches who
teach their teams to play cleanly and
fairly and honestly
Dana, you arc indeed a very fair
and honest pterson and wc arc very
proud of you. The pieopile who know
and work with you know what a fine
job you do working with the young
people in our community Keep up
the gtxxl work. son.

tremcly foul language to starting an
argument with the umpire after the

statement* are true and I have
witnesses to prove it After the game
w a* over ! went over to talk with the
other coach and the umpire follow

in the game I told him I wasn't go

It is thoroughly surprising to me,
a h»»ard member on the WCLI
myself, after serving for two and a

season with tv prevail« incidences
that I would he so unfairly treated.
I have served five years in the lone

league with no previous problems
I have spent hundreds of hours
working with our youth I have en

I am resigning as manager of the

are only there for guidance It's a
shame loo when the politics of the
league begins to ruin the game for
the youngster«
Politics The players are from
Fossil, Heppner, lone. Condon,
Lcvington and Arlington The league
should he represented equally an king
these communities The Ixague
president should schedule meetings
equally among these communities
Opening day should be rotated an
nually among these communities
Fairness and pride for the players
and their communities should he the
priority
Dana may he the scapegoat for die
political pmbletra of the league
because he has the nerve to speak out
and fight for what it nghl He also
was willing to correct mistakes and
learn from evperience No coach is
perfect, and Dana was willing to be
flcvihle. hut was rex prepared for the
onslaught of unfair accusations he
received hy the league.
Now Dana has resigned, and that
is a loss for tl*e Kmc team Problem*
need to be solved if tf»c Willow

time for the adults to remember who

Thank you Dana and Jim for giv
