J e ll. 1H and M iff, 7 years old She has been assisting Bethel Heinrich since last tall in the library Bethel's last day was June Ml A few things Rene has planned is to file the non fiction writers under the author's first four initials, and “ learn to order hooks from the State library on the com puter," she says Another thing she is interested in doing is inc reasing the hooks in the library for fifth through seventh graders They are the “ forgotten c h ild re n " and it is very hard to choose books tor them She is look ing for input in this direction People are invited to stop by the library and sec the large selection o f books on hand New books arc com ing in all o f the time, hopefully, something tor everyone Community Action Program ot East Central Oregon (CAPECO ) is beginning "O peration Clean U p " This operation pros ides sujx-rv is ed youth fo r clean up projects around Senior Citizens homes D m type o f work is limited to chores that can be done by a five member crew during a four hour period This would be something such as clean ing garden beds, brush removal, trash removal <*r furniture moving or other projects that may require assistance Interested persons may contact C A P E C O I HOG 752 I 139 or 276-1926 or contact the senior center in Heppner for more information Operation clean-up begun by CAPEC O VBS Heppner 25* 10 Pages Rachel Harriet has been the Direc tor o f the M orrow County Museum for 28 years as o f May 30 For the last tour or five years Rachel fuu worked a four hour week and as o f last week, is retiring fhe Morrow County Museum was dedicated in 1960 by Amanda fhivall in memory o f her husband and daughter About seven years later another addition was put on that now bouses the animal section JoAnne Wood is the curator under the direction of Rachel She has been putting information into the com- putor listing everything that is hous ed in the museum At some later tim e, history o f some M orrow County families w ill go into the computer. Rachel says Rachel is planning to do some gcneology work after she retires She is not planning on sitting home to do this Hopefully, she w ill get to travel some to do her research Some of her family was in Boston in the I M ill's and she is very interested in follow ing this up Halvorsen is U.G.L.Y. contest chairman Frank Halvorsen has been named Chairperson of the l ' 0 I. Y Bartender Contest in lone for the Oregon Chapter National M ultiple Sclerosis Society, and w ill coor dinate fund raising events for the contest in lone U Ci l. Y stands for Understan ding, Generous, Lovable You M r Halvorsen accepted the ap pointment out o f his desire to help people in Oregon who are suffering from m ultiple sclerosis, and to help fund research into the cause and cure for MS Multiple sclerosis is a progressive and often disabling disease o f the central nervous system No cause or cure has yet been found The U .G .L .Y Bartender contest w ill run in lone throughout the month of September is sharing God's Love The W illow Creek Little league concluded its regular season on June 31 The program was very suc cessful with nearly 250 players par tk'iputing at either major, minor or - •9 The l.am b Weston Potato plant may close, or cut back operations if the Port of M orrow does not lower its water and sewer b ills, John Bristow o f the Port told the Hcpp ner Chamber o f Commerce last week Bristow said the potato processing company has told the Port it would like to see its $33,500 per month water and sewer service charge lowered so the company can keep its Boardman plant competitive The plant is located in the Port o f M orm w in Boardman and presently employs around 450 people It is the largest employer in Boardman and M orm w County Water and sewer fees paid by la m b Weston arc used to pay o ff debts the Port incurred when install ing a large waste water disposal system used in the processing o f potatoes Bristow said the Port's tlebt on the waste system ami Hint to about $4 6 m illion “ If Lamb Weston shuts down it would have a severe impact on businesses and the county tax base." Anyone interested in having a do to stop the down slide " Bristow said that when a propos ed landfill is opened in M orm w County, and large amounts o f waste material begins arriving at the Port's shipping terminal (T 3), the Port w ill have another source of income, to offset a reduction in rates to laimb- Weston However, Bristow pointed out, the landfill fees w on't begin flowing until the landfill is opera tional sometime in 1991 A larger tax buse for the Port has been discussed by some in the coun ty, however.
