Gribble writes from Indio, California, to tell us that the name of the franchise com pany he began in Oregon in 1968 has changed from "Pre ventative Maintenance" to "Predictable Maintenance." The company's original slo gan, "We discover your breakdowns before they hap pen." is unchanged, however. He explains that, "we became aware that preventative maintenance was not enough. Throughout industry today we hear the term predictable maintenance used because it is critical that industries be able to predict the condition of their equipment not just to prevent failures." U.P.M. has surely grown over the years. It started by using one piece of ultrasonic equipment; it now employs seven different pieces that give the company capabilities in its trouble-shooting busi-' ness to predict the condition of equipment belonging to cus tomers in many businesses wood processing, hospitals, schools, large commercial buildings, ships, mines, shop ping centers and a great va riety of stores and homes. Distinguished guests were Bea Clauson, the state direc tor, and Ada Tresham, both Heppner optometrist attends ed. conference Dr. Edward Shaffiti of Hep pner is among some 40 North west doctors of optometry who attended all or part of a recent two-day continuing education conference at Pacific Univer sity College of Optometry, the university reports. Topics covered included Children's Vision, Strabismus, Amblyopia and Learning Re lated Vision Problems by Dr. William Ludlam, Interpreta tion of Standard Phychologi cal Tests by Dr. Nira Levine, and Binocular Refraction by ' Dr. Rocky Kaplan. Secretary Jason Dougherty read the minutes and gave a report on "Lambing your Ewes." Ryan Currin gave a report on "Watering your Sheep" and Beth Heatherly gave a report on "Internal and External Parasites of Sheep." Report Assigner, Rob Ash beck, appointed people to give reports. Janell Bailey told us how much our animals should weigh for fair. She also brought feed samples for all different kinds of animals. Douglas Gribble, president of U.P.M., will represent the company, one of the nine companies which will participate in meetings p re-scheduled with the heads of industry, bankers and government ministries in Milan, Italy; Paris, France; Brussels, Belgium; and Lon don, England. These meetings will be held at the U.S. Em bassies in each of the coun tries involved. The younger Gribble will be explaining the concepts he has helped to pioneer and will make arrangements to secure business and to set up outlets UP.M. in the European coun tries. The series of meetings will terminate in Paris just in time for the beginning of the World Trade Convention which Gribble will be atten ding. Dr. Robert Jacobs is director of continuing education for the college and arranged the conference. The Pacific College of Op tometry is one of 14 accredited schools or colleges of optome try in the nation and Canada and the only one in the North west. Pacific University also includes a College of Arts and Sciences. Pacific, founded in 1849, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the West. The 55-acre campus is in the heart of Forest Grove, 25 miles west of Portland.
