April 23. 1981 Heppner High elects The Heppner High School student body selected cheer leaders and student body officers in an election last Tuesday at the school. Varsity cheerleaders for the 1981-82 school year are Dawna Devin. Patti Devine, Sheri McMinn, Kathy Hansen and Michelle Aaron. Junior var sity cheerleaders are Lovena Marlatt, Nancy Paine, and Brenda McMinn. For student body officers, senior John Murray was elected president; John Stevens, vice-president; Ann Lindsay, treasurer; Karen Kenny, secretary; Linda Eng lert, assistant treasurer; and Anne Murray, business manager. Not pictured is Ann Heppner With three weeks of compe tition behind them, Heppner High School tracksters are beginning to make their in fluence known as they con tinue to improve upon their ' efforts. Three girls' school records have been broken and others have been threatened. Last week's competition saw the girls finish second to Sherman County in a fourway meet at Heppner; the boys were third, and in an 18-team field at the Sherman County invitational at Moro last Saturday, the Mustangs fin ished in the middle of the pack. Margaret Kincaid establish ed a new school record twice during the week in the 300-meter low hurdles break ing the old mark of :56.4 on Tuesday with a :56.1 clocking . and then running :53.0 at Sherman. She missed the record of : 18.1 in high hurdles with a mark of : 18.2 on Saturday. That mark was good for third place" at Sherman. Kellie Hammond broke her own record in the javelin Tuesday with a throw of 1198" which was nine inches over the old standard but she did not compete on Saturday. Bonnie Arrington set a peson al best also in the javelin with a toss of 90'6". Susan Johnson bettered her time in the low hurdles by over seven seconds Saturday with a :55.1 clocking. It too, bettered the old school record. She placed fifth in the low hurdles at Sherman. Greg Sweeney continues to improve in the distance races, winning both the 1.500 and 3.000 meter races on Tuesday, and, in a field of over 30 runners, was the victor at 1,500 meters on Saturday and ran fourth in the longer race. His best for the season is a 4:32.3 in the shorter race. Mary Kincaid has placed in every meet this year in the highjump. Saturday she tied for fourth place with a 4-8 jump. Not pictured is" Brenda McMinn i ! tracksters rett has consistently been placing in the pole vault (fourth on Saturday) and Marlatt has been steady in the shot put (sixth on Saturday). Marlatt missed placing in the discus by inches as he improved in that event to 103'6", his first effort over one-hundred feet. Garrett was the high-point performer on Tuesday with a first in the pole vault, seconds in both distance races and a fourth in the javelin. Sweeney was high point Saturday. Lisa Wilson won the 3.000 meters at home and was second at 1.500 meters, but her best performance was Satur day with a 13:54.4 clocking at 3.000 meters, good for second place. She has improved some 33 seconds from her first effort of the season. Kristy Polzen and Vicki Smith have both contributed greatly to the 1.600-relay team which set a school record Tuesday along with Hammond and Mary Kincaid at 4:59. Polzen and Smith have been consistent point collectors in heJWMneter run as well. John Moyer has shown continued improvements in the sprints and jumps with a best effort in a non-placing 35'5" leap in the triple jump. Mike Nolan has been limited in action with a broken hand Card tracksters 5th in Sherman Co. invite By.MICIIFI.I.KI.AHl'F On Saturday, April 18 the lone tracksters traveled to Sherman to compete in a Sherman Co. Invitational. The Cardinals finished 5th out of 18 schools as the girls and boys combined for 8f points. Margaret Doherty finished first in the 400 meters with a time of 62.09. first in the 200 meters in 27.55 and fourth in the long jump with a jump of 15' 1 Jim McCabe broke the school record in the 400 meters, placing second with a time of 52.91. He also placed fourth in the 200 meters in 24.21. Treve Peterson placed student body officers, Stevens, Karen i Lindsay make influence known throughout most of the season but will begin competing in throwing events this week. He has been doing some running and placed fourth in the 300-intermediate hurdles at Heppner on Tuesday. Bouaphet Thongdy has been hampered by shin splints and has seen some running in the 400 meters. Her best effort has been a fifth-place finish to a five-way meet at Umatilla. The girls 400-meler relay team turned in their best lone runner breaks three hour mark at Boston Marathon lone runner Al Beck broke the three-hour mark at the Boston Marathon Monday, however, further information on his performance was not available. Beck, a 34-year-old seventh grade teacher at Heppner Elementary school. left last Thursday to compete in the world famous 26-mile marathon. The Boston Marathon is only the fourth run for the 145-lb. Beck, who said he started running only two years ago to lose some of the 165 lbs. he weighed at the time. April 14. the Cardinal tennis players hosted the Umatilla Vikings. The Cards were victorious. 6-1. over the Vikings. Darrell Colvard defeated David Moll. 6-2. 6-2; Donnie Taylor defeated Susie Tustun. 6-1, 6-0: and Chris Kietmann defeated Rev Dornan. 6-2. 6-0 Lisa Meyers was defeated by Wendy Stevens 6-3. 6-3.
