Injuries from chain saws are increasing dramatically as inflation-weary consumers are cutting their own firewood in record numbers. Chain saw injuries serious enough to require medical treatment in hospital emer gency rooms have increased from 29.000 injuries in 1976 to 53.000 injuries in 1979. Since 1973. CPSC has received reports of more than 00 deaths caused by chain saws. , According to CPSC staff, the greatest single cause of these injuries is a phenomenon known as chain saw "kick back." which occurs when the chain saw blade strikes an Physician opens family practice in Heppner Dr. E.J.
