The U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission is urging
chain saw users to take extra
precautions as they cut wood
for the winter heating season.
Injuries from chain saws are
increasing dramatically as
inflation-weary consumers
are cutting their own firewood
in record numbers.
Chain saw injuries serious
enough to require medical
treatment in hospital emer
gency rooms have increased
from 29.000 injuries in 1976 to
53.000 injuries in 1979. Since
1973. CPSC has received
reports of more than 00 deaths
caused by chain saws. ,
According to CPSC staff, the
greatest single cause of these
injuries is a phenomenon
known as chain saw "kick
back." which occurs when the
chain saw blade strikes an

in October announced his
plans to open a family
medicine practice in Heppner,
will open an independent
practice here on January 2.
McCoy says his office at the
Pioneer Memorial Hospital
Clinic will be open for ap
pointments Monday through
Friday.
McCoy, his wife. Mary, and
their young son come to
Heppner from Newport where
he also had a private family
practice.
