I " s , ,The weather has been more favorable for the ladies play , - the past week or two and more are participating. Last week a tie for low gross was between Pat Edmundson and Lois Hunt. Low net honors went to Anetta Klinger and Linda Padberg had the least putts. Cindy Kerr connected for the long drive. - I wasn't aware of the carpentry abilities of Bob and Bill Jepsen until recently, or did I realize they were in the modular building business. Their efforts are certainly appreciated by those of us who over extend our capabilities in areas other than golfing. Thanks men! ; There were some close scores and good scores in Sunday morning's men's play. The final results showed John Edmundson winning over Charlie Rawlins for low gross in a head-to-head competition. Weyland Hyatt came in with low net and Rawlins won his second award for long drive. In the least putts competition a tie resulted between Doug Cunderson and Charles Stark. Maury Groves won KP honors. Before the barbecue on Sunday afternoon the men and women were teamed for a fun round of competition. Each ' shot a tee shot, then shot each others ball and played the best of the last shot. The result was some very low scores. The winning team was La Verne Van Marter, Sr. and Kay Anderson followed by Lowell Cribble and Rosemary Parks. In third place were Frank Anderson and Irene Bonner. Lowell Cribble also won KP honors and in the long drive competition John Edmundson was the winner for the men and Bev Cunderson took the ladies honor. The local golfers will be traveling to Echo for a day of golf this coming Sunday. Kinzua blasts Smittys, 14-9 ' Pitcher Gary Kemp slugged three doubles and a single to drive in five runs to spur Kinzua past Smitty's 1 9, in baseball action last Wednes day night in Hermiston. Kinzua had over 17 hits and made only a few errors for the victory. Smitty's took an early lead as they scored four runs in the first. Kinzua managed only one hit In the first as Lavem Van Marter slugged a triple but was caught sliding home. Kinzua lumped back in the second and rallied for five runs. They never allowed Smitty's to overtake the lead again. Jamie Sands, Gearl Seal, Mike Smith, Kevin Dick, Gary Kemp and Van Marter hit safely for Kinzua. Smitty's scored only one run in the third which tied the score. , In the fourth, Kemp and Van Marter hit doubles along with Mike Rowell's triple to score five runs. Kemp started off a three run rally for Kinzua in the sixth with a double. Rowell and Sands followed with singles. Gearl Seal smashed a triple to drive Rowell and Sands to score. Smitty's could only manage two runs in the sixth. The seventh saw Dan Mc Bride and Kemp hit safely with one cross the plate. Smitty's last chance was to no avail as all three batters popped up or grounded out to shortstop Keith Curnutt. Swimmers eighth Heppner swim team ended up eighth In a 12 team "B" field In the Pendleton Invita tional last week. . LaGrande won the contest for teams with under SO swim mers with 784 points, followed by Ontario 450, Lewiston Clarkston 403, Hood River 375, John Day 213, Vale 103, Heppner M, Burns 80, Baker 78, Enterprise 49 and Canby a.. l L. J m Wim Only one swimmer nau n points. Heppner Coach Doug Sams was pleased with his squad's performance. Bend edged Hermiston out by 24 points for the team championship in "A" action. Bend totalled 1087 points to Hermiston 's 1063. Churches empty The Seventh-day Adventist churches of Heppner, Spray, and Condon will be empty this coming Saturday, and for good reason: the members, and friends who would like to join them, will participate In a district camp-out this week end, July 23 25. at Bull Prairie Campground. Cutsforth ...tag to Treva Button state Park, two groups' of 90 girls camp director for the Mormon each from five wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints from the Richland Stake have been learning camping skills and just having fun in the great outdoors. Tents were' pitched, fires built, showers fixed with hot and cold running water in the 20 acre plot owned by the church for the girls. They all., left Saturday and returned the area to its natural state. " . Driving along the road, a passerby - would - not everr. notice that almost 200, girls had lived in the area for two weeks. --,. r .! The girls were split into , certification groups. Those groups are termed yearlings, first year campers f moun- ' talneer;. second year camp-"' ' era; inspirators, third "year-.. camperer and finally ad- venturers, fourth year camp ers who also serve as coun selors. The girls ranged In age from 14-18. ' . The tents housed nine girls. . In each tent was an adult, one - - adventurer, one inspirator,- ; church. - The yearlings learned such "activities as hiking, how to dress for a hike, how to find north by the stars, fire building, how to use a pocket knife correctly, cooking, some knots and more. " '-"" The second year campers advanced to one day pack trips, cooking full meals, how , to use lashing, and how to use an axe. ' Third year inspirators lear ned how to build a fire without matches, use a compass and 'map effectively, use a saw and two-hand axe, etc. " Adventurers went on a three day pack trip; five miles away; learned how to pitch a tent, learned advanced lash ing and served as teachers and counselors for younger groups. ' Each group, split two weeks ago into Hermiston-Kenne-wick and last week, Richland, Benton City land Prosser were in the mountains for one week. -.They used the natural re sources effectively, packing clay around a sunken barrel and producing apple pie, baked bread, chocolate cake and a cherry pie in their dutch ovens. Penland Lake; a few miles away, gave the girls plenty of water recreation for canoing and swimming. Everything was left in its natural state but the girls finished the camp craft pro gram with lots of information and fun. ml4rl" - 1' ii-i.nl".
