The past k has been dry and "in shiny, with cool nights and moderately warm davs. On the mornings of tte 8th, Oih, 13th and 13th, sharp frosts oc curred senerallv throughout the Sute. The soil has dried out very fast and in I pome few sections in the southern part of ihe State moie rain is wanted for pas ture? and carder.?. Spring seeding has been rushed and it is nearly completed on the hill lands in the Willamette val ley. Plowing for garden, com and fumnier fallow is now in progress. Har dens are very backward. Fall heat is sUoling niw ly and le ginning to Joint in some sections. Its color has greatlv improved during the week and the stand is gmul, except ou verv low land, w here it vet continues spotted and poor. Earlv-sown sprins: wheat, oats and barley are coming tin to good stands and are iertmnating quickly. Fall oats and rve.are looking well. Onion seeding is ir. progress, and a lanje acreage will be cultivated. Hops are rather slow in starling, but those out are making a good gruwtli, and their cultivation has begun in a number of the yard. The range are not in as good condi tion as usual at tliis season of the year, but thev have Improved duriug the week and stock is slowly gaining in wei.'lit and strength. Teaches, pears, plums, cherries, apri cct. and the early varieties of prunes, am ies and strawberries are in blocm Correspondents generally report but slight damage to fruit by frosts, except in f-outhern Oregon, wheie ieaches, apricots and cherries are thought to have been considerable damaged. Mr. M.F. Iiittenhouse, a prominent Chicago lumber dealer, saidin thecourse of an interesting conversation on the ex- tensive rarui'ication of his business Chtc.igo has for years been drawing her lumber supply largely from Lake Michigan norts. P.ut in recent yt-ars that has become well nih exhausted and the supply has been coming from Lake Superior rrt. but even that is ! showing s-izns of exhaustion, ai.d we have to purchase mere and more from Central Wisconsin and the South. The Southern states in the immediate futurv will s.'nd increising quantities to tlie Nor; hern state;'. However, 'he m'gir.v fr.-i-t area.- of the Pacific coat must eventually be drawn on to supply the Eastern cities. I wa aiiproached r.id kng ago by a gentleman who war.tcd to sell me 4.o00,000 feet of lumber f;n Vancouver Island. That is a pretty bif. quantity, bm his timber pr; ."rves were represented on the map by what looked like little dots." There is nothing m-y that can be sa.d in favor of the " Kamhler" bicycle.
