Haywood is secretary o f the Western Federation o f Miner» and when ex- G ovem or Steunenburg was murdered at Caldwell, Idaho, a determined effort was made by the Pinkerton detetives andjthe Colorado mineowners to fasten the crime on the Federation officiale. Harry Orchard, the self ^confessed murderer, left such a plain trail o f his fiendish>ct that his arrest followed as ajm atter o f course and soon after he professed religion and then made a con fession to Detective McFarland impli cating Moyer, Haywood and Pettibone. Their abduction and forcible taking to Idaho, without process o f law, followed Since his confession Orchard has been held as a favored guest, rather than a prisoner, at the Idaho penitentiary and was the star witness against Haywood. Witten has lost all confidence in railroad trains and dry goods sales men. Last Saturday evening he decided to go to Ashland to visit his family, planning to take the 11:00 p. m. train. He missed it. Sunday morning he dis covered that he needed a new shirt and in his innocence he confided his urgent need to a merchant friend, who offered to accommodate him. The meachant is a practical joker, however, and in stead o f giving his customer a 16 size as ordered he wrapped up a 13 boy’ s size. Mr. Witten took his purchase home and, after enjoying a bath, was hurrying into his clothing, as he plan ned to take the 10:11 train to Ashland. A fter divers frantic struggles to get into his new garment and to make a No. 13 collarband fasten around a 16 neck he suspected something was wrong and found it was more difficult to get o..t o f the shirt than to get into it. Just then the train whistled. He miss ed it. The order is the result o f a hi aring conducted at the Cap itol some days ago relative to the inade quacy o f accommodations at the various railway stations in the state. The order will go into effect twenty days from date and among others has the follow ing provisions: “ All passenger waiting rooms and passeger cars used in this state shall be supplied with pure drinking water and lighted, heated nnd equipped so as to render the occupants reasonably com fortable. “ Suitable toilet rooms shall be pro vided and kept clean at each station where an agent is maintained. “ Waiting rooms and ticket offices having an agent shall be open for the ac commodation o f the traveling public at least thirty miutss before the schedule time o f the arrival o f all passenger trains scheduled to stop at such station and shall be kept open after the arrival o f such passenger trains for such length o f time as will afford passengers n reasonable opportunity to transact busines and to leave the station. “ In case o f delayed trains, waiting room i shall be kept epen until the act ual arrival o f such delayed train. “ Waiting rooms at junctions shall le kept open when necessary for the ac commodation o f passengers waiting to transfer from one line to the other. “ Platforms shall be kept lighted at night when the waiting room is, by these rules, required to be open.” Timber I.and.
