Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, October 5, 2016 A7 OCTOBER 2016 GRANT COUNTY 4-H CAMP OPPORTUNITIES The Grant/Harney County 4-H Camp is held in July each year at the Lake Creek Youth Camp located in Logan Valley. The camp brings youth from Grant and Harney Counties from 4th- 6th grade together for a week long camping experience. The camp is steeped with long traditions and lasting friendships. The Teen Counselors along with volunteers and Oregon State University Extension staff are all from Grant and Harney County. TOP 10 REASONS TO SEND YOUR CHILD TO A 4-H CAMP 1. It puts your child in a new environment that allows them to fully be themselves. 2. Gives your Child the opportunity to make new friends. Lifelong friends! To this day I am still in touch with people that I met at CAMP! 3. Helps your child find their independence in a safe healthy environment. 4. Camp encourages your child to develop problem solving skills. 5. Gives your child opportunity to try new things! 6. Your child will learn to appreciate the conveniences of home. 7. Make life long memories! 8. Your child will develop a network of mentors and adults they can count on. 9. Allows your child to have a “test flight” and spread their wings…with guidance. 10. Give yourself a much needed break! Parenting is a tough job! OSU Summer Conference Summer Conference is an opportunity for youth grades 7-12 to travel to Corvallis, explore campus life, make new friends, learn, and have a lot of fun. While there, participants attend workshops on a wide variety of subjects. Over 80 classes are offered including dog agility, an agricultural tour, animal anatomy, geocaching, origami, and impromptu speaking. In addition to attending workshops, participants will hear a nationally acclaimed speaker, participate in a Community Service project, and enjoy many fun activities such as a climbing wall, pool party, bowling and a dance. 4-H Natural Resource Camp Does your child have an interest in learning about the great outdoors or a career in Natural Resources? 4-H Natural Resource Camp is possible by a partnership with many local agencies in Grant County such as: Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs, South Fork Watershed, Forest Service, Safe Communities Coalition, North Fork Watershed, Blue Mt. Forest Partners, Fish and Wildlife, Iron Triangle LLC, Grant County Bird Club, Old West Federal Credit Union, Grant Soil and Water Conservation District, Grant County Chamber, Community Counseling Solutions, Oregon Trail Electric, Bank of Eastern Oregon and more to help with funding and facilitating classes. Your child will get a full week of fun and learning in beautiful Logan Valley at Lake Creek Youth Camp. The age group 7th-9th grade the camp will be held in June, 2017 Eastern Oregon Leadership Retreat (EOLR) Eastern Oregon Leadership Retreat is a student planned, organized, and led retreat for youth in grades 8th-12th. Youth participants have the chance to participate in workshops, leadership and team building activities, community service projects, and so much more. We join up with five other counties from across Eastern Oregon. Your child will have fun meeting new friends and visiting new places. 4-H Day Camp Not quite ready to send your child off on an overnight camp experience? Ease them into the idea of a summer camp by getting them involved with one of our summer day camps. These take place right here in John Day. At day camp your child will have fun being active, having hands on learning opportunities, meeting new friends, learning about local agriculture, crafting, and giving back to their community. 4-H day camps are open to 3rd-5th grade students and are led by teen teachers grades 7th-8th grade. High School Students may also be interested in attending High Desert Youth Range Camp or OSU Young Entrepreneurs Business Week, inquire about these camps and other opportunities. Please call or stop by the OSU Extension Service-Grant County office 530 E. Main St., Ste. 10, John Day at any time to preregister your child for any of the camps. Camp costs range from $20-$220, we always have scholarships available. Your child does not have to be a 4-H member to participate in 4-H camps but we do encourage them to get involved with all that Grant County 4-H has to offer. 4-H enrollment starts October 1 each year for the new 4-H year.
