A6 Seniors Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, October 5, 2016 S ENIOR NEWS John Day Seniors Alma Joslin JOHN DAY – On Sept. 26 we had 30 diners to en- joy breakfast for lunch. Our cook Shay was sick so Lisa took over. We missed you, Shay, but sure saw what a good cook Lisa is also. She did a fantastic job with the help of Danny De- Preist. They ixed pancakes, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, fruit and cinnamon rolls that were yummy. They also sent out 31 lunches, plus 32 frozen lunches to shut-ins. These were delivered by Ineta Carpenter and Darlene No- dine from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These ladies also served us. Darlene led the lag salute and Ineta asked the blessing. Jeanette Julsrud and Ron Dowse manned the desk. On Oct. 17 Paciic Source will be here. They will buy all our lunches and then after lunch they will be here to answer any ques- tions you might have about your insurance. Oct. 22 will be Helping Hands Day by the John Day Church of the Nazarene. If you need help with your yard work call Veanne at 541-575-2949. Ben Luethe won the gift certiicate and Susan Kirk- wood won the free meal. Sept. 29 we fed 55 din- ers with a meal consisting of beautiful baked ham slices, cheesy scalloped po- tatoes, green beans and din- ner rolls followed by apple crumbled cake. Besides the diners in house there were 36 meals delivered out by Chris Labhart and Karen Bailey. Shay delivered 10 frozen meals to shut-ins. The entree was fur- nished by the First Chris- tian Church of John Day. David Pasko greeted us at the desk. Servers were Karen Bailey, MaryLou Horton, Marsha Delaney and Suzanne Tayson from the Blue Mountain Auxilia- ry. They were assisted by Chris Labhart. A thank you goes out to Linda Stoltz for decorating the hall. The artwork on the wall was done by Buzz Jol- ley before his passing. There was no bingo due to both callers being out of town. Bill Choate won the Chester’s Thriftway gift card and Norm Straum won the lunch for two at Valley View. Monument Seniors Soo Yukawa MONUMENT – We had a wonderful meal for our last Tuesday of the month of Sep- tember. Terry Cade and Carrie Jewell served us a delicious meal of open-faced pot roast, very yummy mashed pota- toes and gravy, cole slaw, and birthday cake. We thank all their hard work in feeding us. Bob Blakeslee, Bodean Andersen, and Marva Walker were our greeters. Bob led the lag sa- lute and Bodean made the an- nouncements and prayed the blessing over our meal. Bruce Kramer won the Len’s Drug gift card. Linda Blakeslee and Pam Callahan both won free meals. We had 39 guests total and two take- outs. Judy Harris gave us more details on the success of our Buckaroo Feast and Fall fes- tival. She thanked all those who worked so hard and dil- igently for this event and sac- riiced their time, talents and dedication in service for that special day. We the citizens of Mon- ument thank Judy Harris for her efforts and putting the feast together for our town. We also want to thank all who came and participated in our big to-do. My garden is coming to a close. I picked all my ex- posed tomatoes because there was going to be a chance of freezing. I thought I would pick them green rather than lose them all to frost. Because everything seemed to have ripened all at the same time, I have been taking all sorts of steps to preserve these fruits and veggies. I got a bunch of apples from different friends and have been coring, cutting, and dehydrating them. We’ve been eating fresh apples, too. Wow, the lavor of these fresh apples are just so much more tastier than the ones from the store. I also got a recipe from a friend for can- ning apple pie illing, and I think I am losing my mind. I can’t ind the recipe. I was reading it, then, I think the phone rang and I don’t know what I did with the pa- per. I have searched high and low but to no avail. So I got another one from a different friend and hopefully in the next few days, I will be canning apple pie illing like a mad woman. I’ve never canned apple pie illing before, so this will be my irst attempt. I hope it turns out all right. Our piggies will be butch- ered on the 4th of this month. My husband and I will actual- ly be relieved I think. We will be thankful when we don’t have to water and feed them anymore. I must say though, they did a darn good job of eating and root- ing everything in their pen, almost too well. They even ate down the thistle in there. Too bad they couldn’t eat the gophers, too. I might garden in there next summer again and try to grow some corn and lots of melon and squash. I’m looking forward to not having to water the garden anymore for the rest of this year. Yay! Prairie City Seniors Rose Coombs PRAIRIE CITY – Things were different Wednesday due to Harold having to take Buzz to an appointment in La Grande. Harold came and did the set up early all by himself. We want to extend our best wishes for Buzz’s quick and complete recov- ery from the auto accident last week. As we all agreed, he is one tough customer. So Ken, Ginger, Tom and Jim got the home deliveries accomplished. Bruce did the announcing and I asked the blessing. We had Fran, Julia and Gary helping with the serving and dispensing of drinks. Gary Jacobson won the Prairie Hardware and Gifts $5 gift certiicate. The Sep- tember birthday award of $10 given by Huffman’s Market went to our very own head cook, Iva Gill. I won the 50/50 rafle. Vee- ann announced that the Naz- arene Church will be doing its fall yard cleaning for se- niors on Oct. 22. If you want on the list, give her a jingle. Ron Dowse will conduct an- other AARP driver training class on Dec.14 here. We had another unusu- al meal today: a Reuben sandwich casserole accom- panied by grape juice and a green salad. For dessert we had Samoan chocolate cake with ice cream and coconut shreds. What a combination. All plates were licked clean. Lorna and Krystin brought Helen Ricco, Mari- lyn Randall, Lois Hill, Otho Laurence and Dorothy Blas- ing from the Blue Mountain Care Center. We recorded 61 names in the registration book. You may think that is an invasion of your privacy, but each name goes to help our center receive its pro- portionate amount of return from the government. And that is a good thing. We all made it through the Alleluia celebration on Saturday. Too bad you didn’t get to come. We raised $85 for the Prairie City Ministerial Asso- ciation and $85 for the Prai- rie City Community Center Renovation Fund. Now it’s on to the next activity, Der- rol’s neck surgery. Should be all over and done with by the time you read this. This will be his 14th major surgery. They don’t make enough room on those pages you have to ill out at the doctor’s ofic- es for him. You know, the one that says ‘Please list all your previous sur- geries.’ Then after you labori- ously get them all listed, no one ever refers to that page again. Ah, such is life in the wild, wild West, right? Just be thankful that medical research has made these surgeries possible. Which brings me back to the Intelligent Designer. When you look at all the different systems and struc- tures that have to work to- gether to make our bodies function, how could you come to the conclusion that it all came together by chance? Col. 2:19 … from Whom the entire body, supplied and knit together by means of its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
