T o day be has a bank account that would make the most progress ive real estate dealer in Newberg green with envy. It is no uncom mon thing to be told that the crop went 35 to 60 bushels o f wheat to the acre and 80 to 120 bushels o f oats. A few years at most are suffi cient to make the industrious farmer independent. Are these opportunities to be had now? I answer “ Yes.” A man can homestead and pre-empt 320 acres in all, live on it six years, at the end o f which time he owns a farm worth from $15 to $30 per acre at present prices and has made money in the mean time out o f his crops. The total cost of obtaining government land need not exceed $150. Th at amount would in clude your fare from Portland to Calgary and return, filing fees, locating, hotel bills, etc. A few acres cultivated the first year will more than pay expenses and keep yon. »— — ---- £, There ere also other lands to be had a t low prices it vou do got w is b to homestead, ran^intf from $10 to $20 an acre; small trom payment down, balance on easy payments. Usually the first crop pays for the farm, farm. Fuel and water are there in abundance, coal costing from oi the $2.50 to $4 a ton. Many of necessities o f life are cheaper than you find them in Oregon. But these opportunities will not last long. A government official told me at the rate the best land was being filed on not an acre would be available for homesteading by the last o f fhe year. Prices o f land are constantly climbing. Three years ago land thatfou ld be bought for $3 per per acre cannot be purchased for E d it o r G r a p h ic : Not long ago numerous inquiries reached me asking for an opinion regard ing the opportunities offered in the Alberta country to better the condition ot the poor man and the man ot small means, and it the stone« told regarding the prosperity of that country were not in the main «»¿child of the imagination? I was not able at the time to answer these questions satisfactorily, some fourteen years having elapsed since I visited the Alberta coun try, which at that time was wholly in the possession ot the stockmen, and was called “ The Stockmen’s Paradise,” but how and to what extent the country had developed I had not the faintest idea.
