crop went 35 to 60 bushels o f
wheat to the acre and 80 to 120
bushels o f oats.
A few years at most are suffi
cient to make the industrious
farmer independent. Are these
opportunities to be had now? I
answer “ Yes.” A man can
homestead and pre-empt 320
acres in all, live on it six years,
at the end o f which time he owns
a farm worth from $15 to $30
per acre at present prices and
has made money in the mean
time out o f his crops.
The total cost of obtaining
government land need not exceed
$150. Th at amount would in
clude your fare from Portland to
Calgary and return, filing fees,
locating, hotel bills, etc. A few
acres cultivated the first year
will more than pay expenses and
keep yon.
