Should Chairmen Mack and Hitch .ir ertt their heads together and arrange a joint Taft-Bryan tour by airship, with speeches by both in vnrv town, they'd surely wake up things'. ' The tip Is gratis. It has been said , that Sepaker -..., .,n aninvs heine abused. If true, he must be having the time of his lire right now, as ne is uuoui me nmt abused man in the country, not excepting Rockefeller. As we understand it. President Roosevelt's position In regard to the New York situation Is very clear. He does not care whom the republi can party nominates for governor just so it is Hughes. A great deal is being said about the active demand for one-dollar bills, but that's nothing new in this neck of woods. -We've never known a time when there was not an active demand for 'em. It's dead easy to predict victory for either side, but It's the voters, not the predictors, who will award the flag. Just bear in mind that heavy batting wins more games than noisy coaching. An easy way to ascertain whether your friend has faith Is to try to bor row money from him, but don't make the mistake of thinking it's wise because It's easy. Two years have witnessed a won derful growth in Eugene; what the next two years will bring forth de pends upon the efforts that we make. Certainly Mr. Bryan's most bitter opponent can not . blame him for not entering a controversy merely to ad vertise the Hearst newspapers. ' Among the jokes handed out on the stuui), Mr. Hearst's arraignment of the old parties for being boss-ridden is yet to be beaten. Esperanto can never become popu lar with the "fans" of a town' which has a .losing baseball club. It has no cuts-words. a ' Good time to build a house be fore the sawmills get too busy fill ing eastern orders. ' TIIK LAXI)I.OKI The landlord used to come around As regular as a clock. Among oth?r things Dr. Stearn believes that women should be prohibited from wearing earrings and compelled to wear skirts at least six Inches from the ground, that ev ery man and woman at the age of SO should be pensioned by the govern ment, and that the Senate should be abolished nnd likewise the veto power of the President.
