The announcement wan made uy Prof A. R. Sweetnor, urate biologist, last evening, before the Chamber of Com merce, says tho Marshfleld Times. "Wo have InvestlKated the condi tions pretty thoroughly Jiere and be lieve conditions are favorable to the prorogation of the oyster," said Mr. Sweetser. "The only doubt In our minds as to the advisability of ex uerlmentlne with them Is as to the cause of the destruction of the orig inal oyster beds. If that la liable to bs repeated at frequent Intervals. It would be useless to experiment with Uiom. but I don't believe' it will. I am going to make a further examina tion of the liay and conditions here and we will know definitely about tho matter by about January I . "Tho Btate will bear the expense of securing and planting the seed. I will make arrangements with parties owning the mud spots here for ,a small area to be used for tho oyster. We will have to get the seed from t.he 1'u get Hound. They will grow and propagate here while the eastern oyster will merely grow In size with out propagatin. Must (iiiJird IWmIh. "There Is one thing we need and must have to make the experiment a success and that will be the moral support of the people In seeing that poachers do not Interfere with the oyster beds for at least four years. It will take about that lung to give the oysters a start. "If tho experiment Is a success, It will be a great thing for Coos Bay and for Oregon. The commercial possibilities of oyster culture are great, if we succeed In Coos Day It Is our plan to establish a dozen orH so places In Oregon. At present Va qulna Hay is about tho . only pluce having many native oysters and they are rapidly being depleted there. -"As to the experiment station at Sunset nay. It is coming along nicely. Mr. Simpson contributed a site for the research building, the lumber has been arranged for and we will now have to arrange for the labor. Sunset Hay affords the finest loca tion for studying all kinds of sea life of any north of San Diego. This will be the only station on the Oregon coast and will bu a great advertise ment for Coos . That the thous ands of herring which were strewn on the heaoh of the Pacific ocean near Yanulna bay recently were not de stroyed by any volcanic eruption In the ocean Is Indicated by a logical so lution of their death which Is of fered by W. M. Toner, express mes senger on the lorvallls & eastern railroad and owner of the oyster beds and crab-fishing plant on Yaqulna Bay. The herring enter Yanuina Bay an nually In large schools, Mr. Toner nys, and penetrate far up the Ya qulna river. When t'ley begin to get too much fresh water they return to the ocean. This year heavy sudden rains fell when the herring were go ing Wpstream in large schools and much fresh water overwhelmed 'ho fish. . Mr. Toner verifies his theory by the fact' that , people on the bay saw the dead herring floating out to the ocean from up the river long before the tides threw them out upon the beach. If a volcanic disturbance had killed the herring, It would have caused the death of scores of other kinds of fish. oom Making Sa i r We will have to have more room tor our hie, i i o v i ci l ri l i ulo 111 bchool Supplies ana acnocu juouks wnicn are ... , r i ! 7 II I r in oiHa , e Will C1USC UUl sumc y-ii uui oiuc lines cu COsr r .1. vui in, ia.Au r nep ntxr some or our side Imps ar 1 low cost.
