RATTLESNAKE KILLING ON LONG TOM KKJirrv rattlers destroyed ix one da v ox j. j. wixxs FARM There was a snake-killing party on J. J. Winn'B hill farm across the Long Tom Sunday (hat wan a "rat tling" success. While there are no poisonous snakes In the valley, rat tlers abound in great numbers in the hill country northwest of here. A party consisting of M. L. Harnett, J J. Winn, Andrew Lewis, Kaymond Evans, Kuebel brothers, John Dyer and tho Smith brothers went out on the date mentioned and succeeded in killing eighty rattlers and one hoop snake. One rattlesnake that was kill ed measured three and one-half feet, the largest that has been seen In that section for years. Tho members and friends of the Dane church tendered Miss Marie Scheldt a surprise on Tuesday even lug. Miss Scheldt Is organist at the Dane church and the uiemberB pre sented her with $10 in gold. The evening was spent very enjoyably. Miss Scheldt will leave shortly on an extended visit with friends In dif ferent parts of Washington, hence her friends took advantage of this opportunity to acknowledge their ap preciation of her services in church work". C. II. liogue, M I). Lingo, II. D. Diinlap and a number of others huve purchased a new separator which Is expected to arrive before long. They do not expect to do custom thresh ing, but may perhaps help out their neighbors after their own crops are cared for. The purchasers of this out Fit will be independent hereafter and will thresh their grain as soon as It Is ready. The wiring force of the Ralston Electric Company, of Albany, arriv ed hero Monday evening and com menced work the following morning. There Is sufficient work here to keep the force going for two weeks. J. W. Kirk visited Portland Satur day, whore he purchased a new bar ber outfit. He has opened a shop In the hotel corner In the rear of the confectionery. Mr. Kirk is an old hand with tho razor and will no doubt receive his share of the public patronage. Times. Gctanfir. One or two stones nro said to have been badly damaged. Efforts will bo made to upprehond the persons doing the mischief and In case tiny arc caught they will un doubtedly be prosecuted. Such dese cration seems worse than the ordina ry destructive tendency of youth. Suggestion has been made that long ra ig? target practice has been In dulged In, but It said I hut .22's have dono u good part of the shooting as well. COTTAGE GROYE NEWS OF INTEREST Helshuzzar nroducfd under ali't management of .Martin K. Rob inson, running Thursday anO Friday nights last week at the armory, un der the auspices of the .Methodist church, was a decided success from an artistic, financial and Instructive J viewpoint. The cast contained seven- ; ty-flve people of this city, many ofi whom proved to possess iuu.cn ta.eni. The costumes were beautiful, the mu sic inspiring, the acting In many re Bpects equal to any thai ha3 been pre sented to Cottage Grove people. Pro fessor RoblnBon is certainly an auie Instructor. MrB. Hay Ostrander. who has been In South Dakota and Minnesota for the paBt ten months, visiting rela tives, returned home last week. Mrs. Ostrander, when she left this state, was not quite Bure she would ever be- ronle reconciled to Oregon again However, after nearly a year's ab sence, eoniine In contact with all kinda of weather characteristic of those slates, she finds herself now well satlBfied with Oregon and glad to get back to the land o fldeal pro portions. Mr. and Mrs. Ostrander are this week moving to their SO acre ranch five miles west of town. Mr. Ostrander will still hold his po sition In the barber shop. The many friends of Rev. C H Wallace, the pioneer preacher of I.ane county, and you might say of this section of Oregon, will regret to learn that he Is quite ill at his home in this city. Rev. Wallace's health has been slightly impaired for some time, dating back to an Injury. Nit-, withstanding he has been on the street up to early last week, when he was confined to his home. His pres ent trouble seems to be bad circula tion, which no doubt can be over come. Latest reports are to the ettect that ho is Improving. I MAY 2-4 ar Saturday and Monday May 2-4 rr n . 1 4. A mass of data bearing on what he charged to be a combination of papermakers to raise prices and restrict production was furnished today by John Norris, representing the American Newspa per Publishers' Association, to the se lect committee of the house which is conducting an investigation into the subject of the price of news print paper In the United States,. Mr. Nor ris, with the exception of a short while, was on tho Btand all day. During the time Mr. Norris was ex cused General Eelix Agnus, of the Baltimore American, testified regard ing his vurlous contracts with paper manufacturers, and said that on Jan uary 1 last he was forced by the In ternational Paper Company to pay $12 per ton more for paper than he did last year.
