HELLSBOEO EAILEOAD MEETING. Independent. 5. A large meeting of citizens of Hills bo ro and surrounding country wa3 held aMha courthouse Monday'even ing to consider the proposition of the Astoria railroad company to make their terminus at Hillsboro. Dr. Linklater was unanimously elected chairman, and T. B. Huston secre tary. After preliminary remarks by the chairman, Hon. W. D. Hare arose and explained the many advantages which the terminus of a railroad. from deep water would confer on the peo ple of Hillsboro, and -the "Willamette farmers generally, and was loudly cheered at the conclusion. Mr. E. P. Thompson, representative of the Astoria railroad was present and being called upon, explained at length the conditions upon which the road would come to Hillsboro. He said Hillsboro was an objective point, be ing the county seat, and the company would meet them half way. He said it was only last week thatthe survey ors had decided as to the best route through the mountaius, or the propo sition would have been made to Hillsboro before, as they have already commenced work from Astoria, on the other side, and were pushing the work aloiLg the seaside and up the valley. In consideration of a bonus of 15,000, right of way of 6a feet through the town, and 20 acres cf land for depot purposes and car shops, the company will agree to make Hillsboro the terminus. He said a nearer point connecting with the O. & C. could be had higher up, and in order to reach Hillsboro it would cost "the company 30,000 ad ditional, and thought it was but fair that the town should meet half the expense. He decidedly anuouueed that the road would notcome through except on those conditions. Hon. T. H. Tongue being called upon explained to the farmers the benefits conferred by a direct route to the ocean. He said wheat in San Francisco commanded a higher price by 20 per cent, than in the valley, aud 10 per cent, more than in Port land. If the Astoria road were built farmers would get G cts. more per bushel for their wheat than they now get. Judge Humphreys made a few .ap propriate remarks, and was satisfied that a committee of responsible citi zens would have no difficulty in rais ing the required amount. Mr. Hare moved that the presi dent of the council bo empowered to select four gentlemen to act with him as a comittee of five, to procure subscriptions to make up the re quired amount, and open negotia tions for the right of way; whereup on the chairman called Mr. W. N. Banett to the chair and remarked that they had heard sufficient pro and con to satisfy them of the bene fits to bo conferred by the road. Before undertaking his important office in addition to thi3 other duties, he would like to see what encour agement the committee would re ceive. It was now in order, he said to act, and opened a subscription list Mr. Tongue came forward and put his name down for $1,000. Mr. J. W. Shute next came up and signed for S1,000. Mr. J. J. Morgan put his name down for $250 and 10 acres of land; John Milne $500, and $500 more if it does not go through his land; P. M. Dennis, $100. Several others signified a willing ness to give according to their means, when it was moved and seconded that a committee of five with the chair at the head, be appointed to so licit subscriptions. Dr. Linklater resumed the chair, and the motion being seconded, it was unanimously carried. The chairman announced that the committee would be named through the papers, and also the amounts set opposite each subscriber. The meeting was very enthusiastic and ad journed "amid cheers. The committee is now announced to be composed of Hon. T. H. Tongue, Dr. P. A. Bailey, W. H. Wehrund, S. FISH NETTING. SEINES, TRAPS, POUNDS, NettinE of Every Description and At LOWEST FACTORY PRICES.
