Ex-Senator ErDDLEBERGEB an nounces that lie will not vote for General Malione for governor of Vir ginia, and predicts his defeat. - Kecext political events in Iowa have resulted in a triumph for senator Allison, and his return to the senate for another term is now assured. Sen ator Allison is one of the ablest men in the senate and Iowa does well not to retire him. Bill Nye has been financially "done up" by a Minnesota real estate man, who induced the humorist to trade his house and lot at Hudson, "Wis., for some worthless suburban lots near Minneapolis having a $1,000 mortgage attachment. The county of Custer, in Montana, h the largest county in the United States. It contains 13,569,920 acres and is 150 miles long and 125 miles wide. It is a place of historic inter est, containing, as it does, the site of the great battle of the Little-Big Horn, where Custer and his force were massacred. Tuppek, the Dominion minister of marine and fisheries, says that all ships of her Majesty's navy are ex empt from the instructions issued to the Canadian government's harbor master. This statement was called forth while discussing the recent ac tion of Admiral Heneage at Esqui mault in removing a German vessel to make room for one of his squadron. In the elections this fall, in addi tion to the four new states which vote in October, five states Massa chusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, and Virginia will elect gov ernors and state offiecrs. New York will elect state officers, except gov ernor and lieutenant governor, a judge of the court of appeals and a new legislature, and Maryland, Nebraska and Pennsylvania will elect certain minor state officers. New York figures up to its own satisfaction that during .the world's fair in 1892 at least half a million people will be added to the transient population of the city, who will spend there 450,000,000. St Louis, which has an executive committee and a finance committee at work on its world's fair-project, may be counted on to "see" these figures and go them a good deal better, and the arithmet ical mind is appalled at the prospect of Chicago's figuring. Even in the pineries and densely wooded sections of Michigan and Wisconsin there have been no such forest fires as those reported as rag ing in Montana at the present time. In September, 1881, over 2,000 square iriles of Michigan was burned over and 15,000 people rendered homeless, while 200 people lost their lives. The destruction of life and property in Montana is perhaps not so great as this, but the area swept by the flames is much more extensive, being esti mated at from 3,000 to 10,000 square miles. Eternal vigilance is the only safeguard against theso destructive visitations. ADVICE FROM BELOW STAIRS. "Bridget, I -would give all my wealth for half of your health." "Sure, ma'am, you need only give ?5, lor that's the price of eIx bottles of ' J. V. S.,' as the boys call It Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla will make you as strong as me, ma'am." Mrs. J. Barron, of 142 Seventh street, San Francisco, writes: "I have been taking Joy'a Vegetable Sarsaparilla with Immense benefit, It is perfectly splendid to build up nervous, run-down and worn out women." Sirs. Fred Loy, of 327 Ellis street, Mrs. G. Werner of 235, Berry street, and hundreds of others relate tne same experience with the pure vegetable Juices of this California compound. Telegraphic Letter From the Metropolis. Portland, Sept. 7. The steamer T.J. Potter vn make her last trip to Astoria for this season on Tues day the 10th inst. Reports from the big Oregon ex hibit now travelling in the eastern states pronounce it to be the finest in the country. The exhibit is now at Buffalo, New York. Over 2,DOO,000 brick have been or dered for Seattle. All the yards in the city are running full blast and are unable to snpply the demand. This afternoon Savannah I. Bran don was divorced by judge Stearns from liichard Brandon. William Basquell, the young Eng lish sailor apprentice who sued the British ship City of Carlisle for $15,000jn the United States district court, and who secured a judgement for $1,530, will soon leave overland for New York, where he will take a steamer for London where his parents reside. The boy was badly hurt. Though he was once a very bright little fellow, since the accident by which his skull was broken he acts like a baby. There is verv little wheat coming into the city at present. Some full carloads have arrived over the South ern Pacific from the valley but the farmers are pretty I 'generally able to hold and are waiting till prices get better. At present offers are very low and the prospect is that before very long they will be much better. The large fleet of vessels now enroute to the Columbia will have to be sup plied with cargoes and if the supply keeps so close as their charters near the date of expiration the commission men will be forced to secure wheat even at an advance. The Portland flouring mills are not running at full blast, as heretofore, on account of their inability to se cure wheat nt prevailing prices. There is lots of wheat in the ceuntry: in fact the past season has Been one of the most auspicious the state has ever known. Whatever wheat is mov ing now, which is very little, indeed, is Jiot under sale, bnt for storage. The last steamer from San Fran cisco brought, as a portion of her car go, a large quantity "of slot rail for the Portland Cable Railway company. This is the rail, the lack of which has so long retarded the building of tho road. INCOMING PASSENGERS. The following is the passenger list on the steamer State of California sailing to-day for the Columbia river: R. Johnston, H. H, McNeil, E.G. Walker, Jas. Donovan. R. Chapman, F. L. The arrival yesterday in the Chinese quarter of this city of four Chinamen clearly demonstrates the evil effects of the ruling of attorney-general Miller and secretary Windom in the matter of Chinese so-called tourists. These four are fresh from China via San Fran cisco, and they stated that they each paid 3160 to enter this country." jTUDOE HOADLEV'S OPINION. New York, Sept 4 Judge Hoad ley, addressing the social convention, said the decision of the United States preventing the use of breweries in Kansas, against the manufacture of oleomargarine in Pennsylvania and fixing prices for elevating grain in Illi nois, were contraventions of the bills of rights of several states securing to the people the right to hold and enjoy their property. TRADES UNION. Dundee, Sept 7. At tho session of the trades-union congress a ceusus re port on the 8-hour movement was presented, showing 39,629 for the movement and 62,883 ngainst it The record of cures accomplished by Hood's Sarsaparilla can. never be com pletely written.
