Working For Other Men.
All honest men are working for
other men. If a man works ex
clusively for himself be is a coun
terfeiter, or a forger or a sneak
thief or per chance a highwayman.
All love of industry, all love of in
tegrity, all love of kindred, all
love of neighbor, all love of coun
try, and all love of humanity is
expressed in labor for others. For
this service thus performed a right
to a reward is required, and he for
whom the service is performed has
imposed on him the duty to render
the reward. Everywhere in civil
ized society men are thus working
for others.
Every man, in all the years of
his labor, toils for his fellow men,
and the practice is universal among
all civilized men and lasts from
generation to generation; and uni
versal practice is gradually be
coming crystalized into universal
habit. One man is trying to make
better houses for his neighbors,
another man is trying to make
better shoes for his neighbors, an
other man is trying to make better
laws for his neighbors, and an
other man is trying to make better
books for his neighbors. Every
man is thus forever dwelling upon
the welfare of his neighbors, and
making his best endeavor for their
good, and thus the habit grows
from generation to generation, un
til atIast some men forget that
there is reward for service, and
labor for their fellow men because
they love their fellow men.

The earnings of the Northern
Pacific for the first week in Au
gust were $373,532. an increase
over the same week last vear of
$81,525.

one hour at Brookston, Texa?, the

Wonders Worked By Machinery.
In the Maine corn packing in
dustry," as well as in all others, in
ventions have worked wonders.
Nowadays, instead of cutting the
corn by hand with a common corn
knife, improved cutters are used
and will cut. from 150 to 300 ears
per minute. The old fashioned
way of filling the can by means of
a tunnel and wooden plunger or
spoon has been superseded by the
perfect steam power filler with a
capacity of 20,000 cans per day,
has taken the place of the dish
cloth in the hands of the factory
girl. In the best equipped factories
of to-day, the services of half a
dozen persons, whose duty it was
to look over the corn after it was
cut from the ear and remove all
silk and other foreign matter, are
done away with by a single corn
silking machine, which does the
work thoroughly and rapidly. A
husking machine, with a capacity
of ninety bushels per hour, has
been invented by a Portland gen
tleman, and by its aid a bushel of
corn can be husked, cut, silked,
put in cans and made ready to be
hermetically sealed in three min
utes, or in less time than is re
quired to properly husk and silk a
single bushel of corn by hand.
"What b-e-a-u-tiful peaches,"
said an old lady, as she stopped at
a stall in the market and admired
a basket of early peaches. They
were covered with a pink gauze
and looked very tempting. The
old lady bought the peaches and
took them home. The next day
she appeared again at the stall
and showed the stall keeper a
small piece of the pink net, "Do
you keep that kind of veiling for
sale?" she asked. 1 he stall keep
er told her that he did not.
"Well," she said, "when I got
them peaches home, they were
small and sour and green, and 1
thought if I could get some of
that stuff that made them look so
pretty and plump in the basket,
I'd wear it myself. If it would
improve me as much as it did the
peaches, folks would think I'd
found the Elijah of life."
