When a man doing business in your own toil n and who employs men who buy all they eat mid wear of you, asks you for your trade tell him you can get your work done cheaper in Portland. When your folks want a pair of shoes or a hat or dres3 send to Portland for it. When an itinerant peddler comes along to take your measure for a shirt or a coat or a cook-stove or a pair of boots, give him the order and then wonder why As toria merchants don't keep a larger stock. I A Reckless Practice. I One of the definitions of liberty is ' .. . - c a right to Uo aa you please, pro vided you don't interfere with any one else's right to do as he pleases." It is a good rule to observe. We have before commented on the reck less practice of indiscriminately firing off guns and revolvers on tho hill sides and elsewhere in the suburbs of tho city. Should a terrible accident resulting in death or crippling occur, tho recklcsE person who fired tho shot would of course bo "very sorry." The fact of being "sorry" would be of great value to the injured party. We suggest that the authorities make an example of the first one found viola ting the ordinance regarding such offense. Dudette va Dudess. Ed. Asteriax: Speaking of dudes we wish to say a few words on the subject, not on the dudes but on the word, tho name. Now if the new outgrowth from alang dom is to be admitted into tho King's English upon an equal footing with other common nouns let us settle upon some decent termination which will make it applicable to the fair sex, far it would be absurd to say that there are no female dudes, for you may perhaps have noticed that a lady writing to the Catahoodiee Gyraffe to inquire what is the feminine of dude, to which the editor very complacently answers dudette. Now where did that learned dictator get his knowl edge? Ancient history is silent on the subject; science it seems has not grap pled with it, orthoepists have es chewed it, and unless he can produce something better than his mere dic tum we are going to rebel; wo object to the "ette," for many reasons; first, we have too many etts altogether; second, ''ette' is not tho proper thing, it is not only arbitra ry but, a perversion of the sense of the sulux, which being a diminutive can not be bulldoaed into a simple expres sion of sender. Now, we mi"ht call it Dudce or Doodledoo for that mat ter, but we have a terminal already in use which is euphonious, graceful and proper and as we believe in the survival of the fittest, we contend for its application in this case. Dudette indeed! now suppose the fair dudess should be a two hundred pounder wouldn't sho bo a petite Dudette, and when the ladies come to talk of Miss Antouette being a brunette wearing a rosette and smoking the fragrant cig arette bsing a dudette wouldn't the repitition be monotonous? well, allow us to just blandly whisj-er that it would. Now as the ladies have been, as they have a perfect right to be, the first to inquire into this matter, we think they will agree with us that dudess is the proper and the only proper feminine for dude. We have princess, empress, actress, doctress, and so on, and why not dudess. In conclusion. Mr. Editor, allow us to hope that the press, the great promot er and director of thought, the great laboratory of public opinion, will earnestly, and persistently sit down on the dudette, that ia, on the term, the name, you know. A Subscriber Getting the Worth of His Money. Yesterday evening a man, a little top heavy, rushed iut j tho telegraph j othce, seized a telegraph blank and by propping himsolf against the coun ter, managed to write the following message: "Kate; I won't be home till morn ing. "Harry." "What'll that cost?" said the man, handing the message to Mr. Haiml tun, tho gentlemanly manipulator of electricity. "Let mo see. Seven words 40 cents.' "Forty, oh? How much for ten words?" "The same price; anything not ex ceeding ten will co3t you 40 cents to any address in Portland," answered the operator, making a spring to muz zle an instrument that was sputtering as if it had delirium tremens. "I'm bound to have the worth of my money out of you corporations then," said the man, bracing himself against the counter as he traced on a blank this clear message: "Incomprehensibility, ui.iuiitV.cuir ers, transcendentalism, Pen d'Orei'lu, concavo-convex, Ilw.tco, assassination, Skookum, imperturbability, piiilopr.i genitiveness." "There, string that on your wira and send her at a 2:40 gait," s.iid tho ni m, with a look of vengeance in his eye. The operator counted the words, but volunteered the information that there wa no senso iu the iiioj-sge. "I know there's no sense in it, but Kate'll understand it all the sime; she'll know I'm on a drunk anvway when I send a message, whether its sense or not. I make 'em long on purposo to break the back of your darned machine. Shovel 'em iu and start the crank. I'm in for a good time. Never mind the expense, here's your forty cents." Samuel Wood and family ar rived on yesterday's steamer from Kinsley, Kansas. Mr. Wood has ac cepted the pastorate of tliy Congrega tional church of this city. Tho Kiiitley Graphic, of the 2-lth ult,, siys: 'On Sunday evening last the Rev. S. Wood preached his farewell ser mon to a crowded congregation. Mr. Wood has done much to improve his congregation and build up the church, and has paved the way for his succes sor to do a good work. lie has by example and precept won the esteem and confidence of the community and his departure will be regretted by our citizens generally. We trust that the change of climate may prove benefi cial to Mr. Wood's health, which was the prime cause of his removal from our midBt." Tho West Shore for May is re ceived. It is a magnificent number, and is profusely illustrated with fine engravings. The next issue will be mostly devoted to a description and illustration of the seaport of Oregon. Axtonana will doubtless order an ex tra 30,000 or 40,000 copies. It will be a bi advertisement for the place. D. L. Juno, who died in Portland last week from being thrown out of a dog-cart, was to have been a contest ant in a Pacific county land suit, which was tried at the Vancouver land office on Monday. Ho was de fendant in the case, which went for plaintiff. Deceased was at one time a law partner of ex-President Hayes, at Fremont, Ohio. Tn the supremo court last Tues day, in tho case of J. H. DeForce, appellant, vs. Hancv Welch and oth- en, respondents Decreo was affirmed. Opinion by Lord, J. The legislature recognizing the fact that tho people had dealt with and sold tho tido lands adjacont to their othor lands, as their own, provided by tho act of 1874 that tho purchaser of any tide land from the owner of tho land adjacent to such tido land, shall have tho right to pur chase the same from tho state. By this act tho legislature recognizes the rights of purchasers from adjacent owatrs. Memorial Service By special request Chaplain Scott will deliver a momorial address Sun day night at the Baptist church. The Chiplain is an old soldier and com manded a regiment in Gen. Hancock's old second corps during tho war. Ho was wounded five times and won the sobriquet of "tho fighting parson," by which title ho is known throughout tho east. The churches throughout the land have observed these services, and it is especially appropriate to hold them here. All members of the Grand Army, and the old soldiers are invited, and are requested to occupy sittings in the body of the church. The subject of the address will bo J "Memories and Lessons." A Complaint- One of our subscribers writes coni plainiug of alleged refusal of a mail carrier to do his duty. He says: "Our mail-carrier has refused to mail letters, or take any mail to tho office for me several times, without a fee of 25 cts. per month for tho 'same. And he says, in effect, to me. 'what are you going to do about it? 1 am 'solid,' you are nobody! you can't hurt me!' As it is a public injury to hava public servants neglect or refuse to perforin their duty, I consider it the duty of any citizen to ventilate the matter. Every mail-carrier makes oath to conform to the postal rules and regulations of which the following is ene: 'Every route-agent, postal clerk or other carrier of tho mail shall receive any mail-matter presented to him if properly prepaid by stamps, and de liver the same for mailing at the next office at which he arrives; but no fee shall be allowed him therefor.' (Page 148, sec. 028 of postal rales and regu lations.) This is plain and unequivocal; and anyone refusing to comply, is a violator of the law, and should bo compelled to step down and out.
