-" - -w CD Xftc Sailg &slxaiim. ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY-...- JUNE 2, 18S3 Realizing tho Situation. Tte growth of Seattle in popu lation and in material wealth has ben phenomenally rapid during the past three years. There is no reason to believe that the next three years will show a diminu tion of growth. The construction of the railroad to the Green river ? t&jeotl fields will contribute largely to this result. But we remind our readers that the end of the term of three years will, if the vir tual promise of Mr. Villard to com " fplete the Cascade division of the N. P, R. IL. by that time, is kept, bring this city and other aspirants to metropolitan honors to the cru cial test. At that time Seattle, Astoria, New Tacoma and Port land will be in a position to con test for the palm of superiority. We have named the above points ia the order which we think it most likely the fight will range itself. Seattle has all the natural advantages on her side. It be hooves all her citizens to watch tke points, and allow nothing wfeatevar that will strengthen her position, to pass into the hands of ner rivals. It may be remarked in passing, that the plucky little city at the mouth of the Columbia, is growing more rapidly than any place in tho northwest, Seattle, perhaps, excepted. This statement is made upon what we deem reliable authority. Tho value of the canned salmon of last year's catch, was three million dollars. A town which boasts of a single industry of such importance cannot long fee kept in the background. Na ture intended Astoria as the chief seaport of Oregon. And such it will become. It is well to know who our real competitors are. Hence these allusions to our chief competitor in the great race for commercial superiority in the northwest. In the meantime it behooves Seattle to strengthen her outposts and prepare for large transactions and great adventures. It is necessary when the critical moment arrives to be prepared to show warehouses replete with goods sufficientto "job a bill" for the heaviest retailing house between Gray's harbor and the foot of the Rockies. Ik instituting a comparison be tween our city and the chief city on the Sound, the Herald is just ia its summing up from the point of view that a Seattleite would naturally take, bat by the time three years have elapsed, our city will have so far progressed that no comparisons will be necessary to demonstrate Astoria's preemi- -aence. By that time it is cona deatly expected that a great por- tion ot the business of grain ship ment that is noYf deflected out of its natural channel up a tributary stream will iloat in bulk to its proper shipping point; that the completion of the road from the heart of the great Willamette Val ley will pour the grain of that sec tion into our docks and ware houses for deep draught vessels to load; that a line of coast road will traverse the fertile region to the south of us along the ocean shore; that the natural increase and unpre cedented immigration will fill Clat sop, Columbia. Tillamook, Pacific, Chehalis and Washington counties an empire in themselves with people, who, attracted by the great advantages this countTy pos sesses, will make their homes here, and help to build up the great commercial city of Astoria. This much may be said without any semblance of dealing in flights ol faaoy. The Herald gives its rciders some excellent advice; our own. merchants will do well to not grow weary in well-doing, but con tinue their present effort to gain and hold the trade of ever' com munity that is within their reach. It is only iu this way that com mercial supremacy can be at tained. TnE Boston. .Tournal says that no nation has ercr established a system of manufactures without a protectire policy. It adds: "No nation has been enabled to hold its own industrially against richer and more advanced neighbors without the" sheltering influence of protection. The nation which to " day is presenting the greatest op position to the theory of protection sad is the most strenuous advocate of free trade, was for a century uader t&e most positive protective measures ever known. It scarcely need be added that this nation is Great Britain, or particularly Egknd;" ' Since the Cxar's coronation the triecramft regarding Nihilistic ttreats in Russia -are scarcer. "Tfeere's tbe pause that makes ca taattj of so long- life." - The Nevada, Cal., Transcript says that Grass Valley contains more dead merchants to the square foot than any town on the North American continent, and refers to the colums of the Union to dem onstrate its statement. A few years ago Grass Valley was one of the most prosperous towns in California. It got so prosperous that the merchants got an idea that they could make money without advertising. When the local paper began to run down the general idea got abroad that the town was on the decline. San Francisco merchants began to draw the credit strings tighter, and capital avoided it. The town soon got a bad name, and now the merchants are reap ing the fruit of their parsimony. Eastern journalists are nomi nating the editor of the New York Sun for the presidency, but ex press a fear that he is too good a "man. The only editor that ever ran for the presidency was beaten, and died of a broken heart a month after. Still, a good many would be willing to risk Pixley of the Argonaut. It might kill him, but it is doubtful. Seldom has the world been more peaceful than at present. With the exception of a little this-jsize-three-for-a-doliar war in South Africa and a little breeze in Chi na, the human race is quiescent. One year ajjo Arabi Bey and Sir Garnet Wolsely were fighting in the northern part of the same pe ninsula. Astoria's streets are being rap idly improved. The improvement would be still more rapid could lumber bo procuied as fast as wanted. BOK.V In Astmia, May :xi. mi, to the wife of D. 11. Caswell, twin bo.
