The "Jubilee Singers" are not meeting with an overwhelming buceeys in the intrior. A single man, or a man and wife competent to take charge of a mess house cannery can hear of an oppor tunity by applying at this office. Judge Bennett was in the city yesterday. He left District Attorney McBridu at St. Helens. The judge leaves for The Dalles this morning. Yesterday was an April day, all smi'es and tears, a little too much of the latter to be pleasant. The river was rough and craft of all kindB hugged the shore. The State went to sea at half-past two. Henry Villard and party left San Francisco on tho Queen of the Pacific They will arrive here to-morrow. At Astoria Mr. Villard will take the Wide West for Kalama and visit the Sound before going to the Willamette valley. Any one desirous of procuring a good, substantial and handsome five octave Schoringer Organ, original cost ICO dollars, or a fine billiard table, with fixtures, worth 120 dollars new, at auction prices, should attend Holdeu's auction sale to-morrow morning. See ad. While Henry Villard was in San Francisco he gave orders that the first steamer arriving from the north should be put on as a special to carry detained. immigrants to their destina tion. Accordingly the Mississippi sails to-day for northern ports with a full list of passengers. Lappeus, Portl md'a chief of po lice, has been formally acquitted by tho investigation committee of all charges preferred against him in con nection with tho smallpox case3 at Walla Walla, thus cutting of a prolific source of supply to tho Walla Walla papers for denunciatory items. In noting the merits of other pa pers, (and which they are juBtly enti tled to) pray don't overlook one fact that your own paper does your own town more good and is rooro practical benefit, in one week than all this spread eagle business that you get so much of in other papers can do you in a year. Now that our city is fast assuming her rightful posi tion, an indifference to her or her people is all that is accorded. Painful Accident. Yesterday morning Robert Mon teith.a six year old son of R. V. Mon teith met with a sad mishap. The lit tle fellow was out in the yard with his sister two years older than he, and in s9ino way got his hand under a hatch et with which she was splitting kind ling. Tho keen edge severed tho sec ond, third and fourth fingers of his right hand. Surgical attendance was summoned and the stump3 were prop erly amputated and dressed, tho boy bearing the pain like a little hero. Sa!mon Canners Meeting. A meeting of cannerymen "to dis cuss matters relative to the present season's work was held at tho office of Samuel Elmore last Wednedaj- even ing at eight o'clock. Among tlnse who were present, an Astokian repor ter who was on deck, noticed J. W. Cook, Vincent Cook of Clifton; J. G.Sregler, of Brookfield; N. W. Tal lant and E. A. Tallant of tho Cutting Packing company; M. J. Kinney, of the Astoria Packing Co.; Thos. Dealey, of the Columbia Canning Co.; Chas. Thomes, of Thomes & Knowlcs; Saui'l Elmore, Win. T. Coleman &. Co.'s As toria agent; F. C. Reed and C. Tim mins, of Timmins & Co.; Geo. H. George and Win. T. Barker, of A. Booth A- C: S. D. Adair. Wm. B. Adair, J. Adair, Jr., Jay Tuttle, J. Q. A. Bowlby, of Ocean Canning Co.; W. J. Barry, E. A. Noys, F. J. Taylor, of tho Seaside Packing Co.; and others connected with the can ning interests of the Columbia. Upon calling the meeting to order and appointmgachuiruau and secretary, the purpose for which the meeting was called was slated, viz; to discus3 the advisability of reducing the number of boats on the river, and tho best means of effecting that result. It was moved and seconded that tho fishing boats on the Columbia river be reduced to one half tho present number, provided that all interested would so agree. This gave rise to considerable discus sion. In response to a question re garding the action of certain canning companies composed wholly or in part of men who would do their own fish ing, Thos. Dealey stated that speak ing for those co-operative com panies he was of the opinion that they would concede to any agree ment to reduce the number of boats so that each cannery would put the same number in tho water. A propo sition something like the following was then made: Divide the total number of boats on the river by the total number of canneries, aud the quotient, whatever it should be, by two, and agree to put just that many boats in tbo water, thus giving each cannery on the river an equal number of boats in use. Some one made the sugges tion that that would give some of the canneries more boats than they had now. Sitm'l Elmore stated that, speaking for Wm. T. Coleman fc Co., several of tho companies that they repre sented would bo willing to reduce their boats to one-half of the prosent num ber. Thos. Dealey said that in his opinion there wasn't a ioint stcck company on tho river that would agree to reduce tho number of boats that they proposed running this sea son unless each ran just the same number. He also stated that the Columbia Canning company would pay $1.25 a fish to outside boats and would assess its stockholders for the difference. Mr. Dealey made the further declaration that the ideas that he was then and there expressiHg were not to be taken as his individual sentiments, but that that was tho way the joint stock company felt about the matter. After that there didn't seem to be much room for further discussion and the meeting adjourned. What did he Say? The othor evening a reverend gen tleman sat down at a Cincinnati tea table with a very thoughtful air, and attended to the wants of his brood iu a voiy abstracted m&uner. Presently lie looked up to his wife and said: 'The Apostle Paul" "Got an awful lump on the bend 'aaternoon," broke in the pastor's eld est son' "'playing baso ball. B.it flew out of striker's hand when I was um pire, aud cracked me right above the oyes, and dropped mo. Hurt? Golly!" And the lad shmk his hed in diurnal, but expressive pautnmiue, as he ttu derly rubbed a lump that looked like a billiard bil1 with lism- ou it. The pjstor gravely paused for th interruption, and resumed: "The Apstle Pnul " "Saw Mis Dash down at Green bau m's this afternoon," said his eld est daughter, addressing her ni"! her "She had on the same old everlasting black silk made over with a est of green silk, co-U-tail basque pattern, overskirt made with diagonal folds in frout.edged with deep fringe; dark felt hat. with black velvet facing and pale blue flowers. She's going to Chicago." The good minister waited patieutly and then in tones which were just a shade louder than before, ho resumed: "The Apostle Paul" "Weut in swimmin' last night with Henry and Ben, and stepped on a clam shell," exclaimed tho youngest son; "and cut my foot so I can't wear my shoe; and, please, can't I stay homo to-morrowl" The pastor informed his son that he could stay away from tho river, and again essayed his subject of conversa tion. Ho said: "The Apostle Paul says "My teacher is an awful story teller," shouted the second son; he says the world is as round as an orange, and tnrns round all the time faster than a circus man can ride. I guess ho hasn't got much sense." Tho mother lifted a warning finger towards tho boy, and said "Sh!" and the father resumed "The Apostle says" "Don't bite twice as much as can chew." broke out the eldest reproving the assault of his little sis ter on a piece of cake. The pastor's face showed just a tri fle annoyance as he said in a very firm and decided tene: "The Apostle says" "There's a fly in tho butter," cried tho youngest hopeful of tho family, and a general laugh followed. When silence had been restored the eldest daughter, with an air of curiosity said: "Well, pa, I really would hko to know what the Apostle Paul said." "Pass the mustard," said tho pastor sternly- And now the question is: What did the Apostle really say that Rev, Mr. Philactor conld have so curiously construed. Or is it the New Version? It seems their fame is going abroad. This season orders come in from California, and on nearly every outgoing steamer is machinery for California, Astoria- built. Yesterday, for instance, was shipped on the State of California, soldering machines, retorts, pans, etc., made at the Astoria Iron works for a canning firm in Sacramento. Arndt & Ferchen are also turning out first class work, and as for carpenters and otner worKers tney are so busy sup plying home orders that they have no time to look at an order from the out side.
