m gfte gvtffcj gtstrrriatu ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY APRIL 13, 18S3 Increased Value. Investors arc seeking Astoria property as "a good buy," and any one who has a little piece of city property can get a good price for it. Astoria is going to be a big city and no place on this coast to day offers better inducements for investment. A friend said yester day ""What does the owner want for that lot, do you suppose?" We told him that about 84,000, we thought would buy it. "Well, well," he said, "eight years ago I could have bought that lot for $250." And so it goes. And yet that lot is a better buy to-day at M,000 than it was eight years ago at $250. Then a man could make $25 or $50 on a lot, now he can make in the same proportion as the increased cost. It simply takes a little more nerve, and a little more capital. Wc do not suggest that speculating in lots is just the best way to build up the city, but simply instance this as a showing of the value of Astoria property to-day in comparison with former years. The Salmon Status. There is considerable trouble on the river this season; more than usual. Fort' canneries each averaging as many boats are ready to put them into the water. and the question arises., will it pay? Other questions might be stated but it all comes down to that one questien: "will it pay?" There is just a certain area to fish in; it can bo pretty closely calcu lated about how many fish, will be caught say 1,500.000. Cannery men naturally hesitate about pay ing as much for the raw material as present appearances seem to indicate they must. On the part of the fishermen it does not need much figuring to show that 2000 men could make more out of the work than 3,500. That's just the way it stands. As yet there has been no scheme devised, no agree ment made, no definite concert of action announced. Certain difficulties are in the way of those who would have an agreement made; the general feel ing is that something should be done." Just what that "some thing" is has not as yet appeared. But all agree on one point, viz: that there are too many boats. The international fisheries ex hibition, which begins in London next month, promises to be the finest exposition ever exhibited in the world. As a guarantee of its thoroughness, and of the suc cess which is likely to attend upon it. it is stated that everv inch of space offered l3r the committee has found an applicant, while ev erything of the slightest utility or in any way connected with the bu siness of fishinjr will find a ulace in the exhibits, as, for instance, all kinds of apparatus used in con nection with the fishing industries, fishing-boats, fish-nets, life-boats, full-sized fish markets, refrigerat ing vans for the conveyance of fish, fishermen's cottages, fish-curing establishments, steam dredg ers and steam fog horns. Tanks will be erected, with a capacity of 100,000 gallons of water, in which , the various varieties of salt-water fish will be exhibited alive. The buildings to be used are situated in the gardens of the horticultural society and cover nearly seven acres of ground, affording a floor space for exhibition purposes of 230,000 square feet. The total cost of the buildings is hut little under 20,000 or $100,000. The guarantee fund amounts to 23, 000 or about $115,000. The ex hibition will continue for six months. When the school directors and supervisory committee met last Tuesday afternoon to open the bids for the erection of a school house in district No. 1, it tfhs found that there was but one bid in -that of Holt Bros., for $28,497. As this was deemed excessive it was rejected. A committee of ways and means was appointed to take proper action toward secur ing a $25,000 loan. It is believed that that amount should secure a good substantial schoolhouse, and further that the interests of the district would bo best subserved by "having the house buill by days work. We Thrive. No city north of San Franeisco not even excepting Portland shows better signs of prosperity than does Astoria. Go where you will, you will see houses going up and upon inquiring will learn that they are already rented. Property is held at what sometimes seems fancy prices, but the owners are not at all anxious to sell: there is no effort to "boom," nor any de sire to coax anyone to buy. The property sales that are daily made are all legitimate transactions there are no "washed" sales, and this one item of property values indicates as well as anything can our present and prospective pros perity. Astoria, in common with other communities, has had its periods of dulness and business depression, but the life and energy that is at present diffused through the entire northwest in no place finds better present exemplifica tion than in our bustling little citv by the sea. Press Comment. The Northwest, the official organ of the N. P. R. R. Co., announces that the railroad officials had de cided to change the historic and celebrated "Mount Ranier" into "Mount Tacoma," and desire the opinion of the press upon the sub ject. We are decidedly opposed to the change, which is not de manded by public sentiment, nor founded upon any valid reason. If we understand the matter the mount was discovered by Admiral Vancouver, the distinguished ex plorer, and not by the N. P. R. R. Co., and in the exercise of his undoubted right of discovery, Vancouver christened the mount Rainier, by which it has become universally known through the medium of the writer's pen and the artist's brush. The name is picturesque and pleasing in sound, endeared by association and strengthened and fixed by antiquity. We prefer the good old English name, commemorative of a brave and true man, to the most classic Siwssh cognomen that can be resurrected. The Democrat will stand to Mount Rainier. 7P. IF. Democrat. Very much our opinion. "Rainier" is better than "Tacoma," and, confound the railroad any how! what constituted it a name changer? Port Toionsend Argus. The truth of it is, "Tacoma" is not an Indian name; neither is it English, American or respectable Chinook. It was probably invent- by some lazy white who hadn't energy enough to pronounce the correct Indian name of "Tahoma." "Tacoma" is a burlesque on com mon decency, and we don't pro pose to call the grand, old moun tain by any such name. "Rainier" is good enough for us. Olympia Transcript. Ilere too! A corporation that will deliberately omit the nauie of the second city in Oregon from its map because its people don't fall down and worship it has no busi ness tinkering with names that were set and universally known a generation ago. Next thing they'll want to change the name of Astoria, and call us Siah. Some of the realistic costumes worn at the great Vanderbilt ball in New York, seem to have been particularly successful. The story is current of one young lady made up as a mythological nymph, who, going in to inspect Mrs. Vander b'uYs beautiful bath-room, pro duced such an effect upon the maid in charge by the artistic ac curacy and appropriateness of her appearance that the maid instant ly and instinctively turned on the water in the bath-tub.
