"When a corner politician at a ward meeting rally, erects himself for a speech, and, with wild ges ticulation, eyes in fine frenzy roll ing, and tones of liorror, assures his "fellow citizens" that the elec tion of Smith, Brown or Jones, as the case may be, is the only thing that can save the country, there is no occasion for denouncing the speaker. He is simply making the regulation speech for orators of his class is merely doing what he has ever done' since he was in vented, and what he will, .in all probability, continue to do until the progress of civilization abol ishes him. It is not, however, supposed that tins little, strutting and rant ing demagogue believes that the defeat of his candidate will wreck the ship of state. It is not even suspected that he expects his hear ers to believe the future of the republic for weal or woe is staked on the success or defeat of his party or faction. He is dealing in a sort ai Pickwickian rubbish that has always been the chief and staple of his guild. If he was to talk sense his hearers would be as disgusted as gallery gods are with genteel coined. He must, therefore, stand excused and be treated with tolerant charity, while his obliteration is being slowly wrought by every addition to our educational appliances and other civilizing agencies. But when a statesman or a leader of either party or of an' faction indulges in this sort of pot-house drivel, he has no claim on public forbearance. When such a man a senator, a member or congress, a leader in his state tells the public that the ruin of this nation will be effected if his party is defeated in a campaign, he should be liteially hissed down and metaphorically sat upon. For such a man knows that this repub lic stands on a- foundation that is " not to be shaken by the success or defeat of-any of the parties that are contending for power. Such a man knows, indeed every intel ligent citizen knows, that among all the governments on earth none is regulated by the world's public opinion as more stable than ours. It is not a trivial thing for a recognized leader of men to libel his government and disparage the work of its founders. And what a wretched structure we should have if it were liable to be top pled over or swept :.wiy by the defeat of a party in a popular election! Our history gives the lie to all such calumnies, and our intelligent people owe it to their own self-respect and patriotism to silonce all such calumniators. An luipnrUml Decision. The commissioner of the land office has been directed by the secretary of the interior to give in structions to special timber agents, who ma be called upon to report cases of trespass upon lands within the limits of railroad grants in cluded in the cases of alleged tres pass upon old sections. Paper is now compressed so hard that a diamond can not make an impression on. it, is used for wash basins, chairs, tables, and various other articles of furniture and is also in demand as material out of which to make durable car wheels. New York men are now making "terra cotta lumber," that is the clay is worked up into large blocks, and then cut and fashioned into "boards" like ordi nary lumber. It has similarities and dissimi larities of the iltmost importance in contrast with wood and clay materials, and they seem to sup plement each other. In other words, terra cotta lumber occu pies ah intermediate position between brick-like substances and lumber. It is, for instance, brittle and not fibrous, it lacks strength to resist the transverse strain which is possessed by wot d, auantitv for euantitv: -but h presents greater resistance to superimposed weight. It is fire proof, while wood is not, and it can be' "dressed" by the plane and saw, which, generally speak ing, clayey substances cannot be. In addition, it will receive and re tain on its surface plastering or other surfacing without the appli cation of lath. It must be borne In mind that, being at once an earthy substance and of open or porous' structure, it possesses all the qualities which appertain to those two characteristics in all substances; and it possesses the advantages not belonging to sub stances not having these both. The 47th congress ends to-morrow. A vast amount of work goes over to next December. Among the bills passed on Wednesday was an act relative to pensions, which pro vides that all persons on the pen sion roll and all persons hereafter grantSd pensions who, while in the military or naval service of the United States in the line of their duty, shall have lost one hand or one foot, or have been totally or permanently disabled so as to render their incapacity to per form manual labor equivalent to a loss of a hand or foot, shall receive a pension of 24 a month. All persons now 'on pension roll, and all persons hereafter granted pensions, who in like manner shall have lost either an arm at or above the elbow, or leg at or above the knee, or shall have been otherwise so disabled as to be incapacitated, from performing any manual la bor, but not so much as to require regular personal aid and attend ance, shall receive a pension of $30 per month. . The new iron steamer for which the Northern Pacific has con tracted with John Roach & Son, to run from San Francisco to San Diego, will be 324 feet length of keel, 40 feet breadth, 20 feet depth, 2,000 tons register, with acccom modations for 200 cabin and 500 steerage passengers. It will be completed and ready for sea Oc tober next, and will be one of the stanchest steamers ever built. It is guaranteed a speed of sixteen knots hourly. The Standard says that the de mands on the tax-payers of Port land to-day are greater than the value o money in the markets of any city in the United States, and so long as this is the case, rents, interest, and .everything needed by the producers, mechanics and laborers must be correspondingly high. Itisthis class of citizens that must pay the expenses in some shape or other. ' The fastest train in this country is the New York and Philadelphia express on the Pennsylvania Ttail road, which makes the run of SS.-i miles in 1 hour and 52 minutes, including three stops, or at the rate of 47.8 miles per hour. From Jersey City to Germantown Junc tion, 81.2 miles, the run' is made in 1 hour 41 minutes, including one stop,4 or at thi? rateof 50.5 miles perthour . M. f t In the Star route trial last Wednesday, at Washington, "Merrick, one of the prosecuting attorneys, called Bob Ingersoll a puppy; that party promptly re sponded by calling Merrick a "dirty dog." After other meta phorical language the judge sum moned up courage and "repri mended" them. Those Washing ton judges are spunky men.
