0) Tfl 'sEm & WS" Vol. XYIII. Astoria, Oregon, Friday Morning, March 2, 1883 No. 130. ss ,56i JiJP Jv Millie m A MATTER Of "INTEREST." Many infer that the increase of money at six per cent, is just twice as rapid as at three per cent.; but in reality the increase is vastly more rapid than this. In 100 years at six per cent., the increase of any given sum is about eighteen times as much as at three per cent. If 1 be invested, and the inter est added to the principal annually, at the rates named, wo shall have the following result as the accumu lation of 100 years: One dollar loo years at 1 perceut S2 23 2 . 11 25 3 19 25 ZV, 31 25 4 50 50 4H . 81 50 5 131 50 C 340 00 7 803 00 8 .... 3.203 00 9 5,513 90 10 . 13.609 00 12 84,075 00 15 .... 1,104.405 00 18 15.145.0C7 00 21 2,551,799.404 CO There are probably, few, how ever, familiar with the subject of the rapid increase of capital put at interest, who would not be startled at the announcement that the cost of the outfit of Cristopher Columbus in his first voyage of discovery, put at interest at six per cent., would by this time have amounted to more than the entire money value of this continent, together with the accumulations from the industry of all who have lived upon it. If any doubt this let them reckon the amount, estimating the entire outfit to have cost only the small sum of 5,000, and re member that that money doubles at six per cent., in a little less than twelve years, or accurately, in eleven years, ten months and twenty-one days. Allowing it to double every twelve years, this is $5,000 at interest at six per cent, since 1492, it will be found would have amounted to $17,895,700, 000,000; which estimating the population of the entire continent of America (North and South) to be S5,000,000, or 17,000,000 families, averaging five members each, would give more than $1, 000,000 as the possession of every one of these. The interest on $1,000,000 at six per cent is $60, 000, which now would be the princely annual income of each of these 17,000,000 families from the accumulations up this time upon so small a sum as that named for the outfit of the discoverer. In Hildreth's "History of the United States," it is stated that Manhattan Island afterward called New Amsterdam, now the city of New York was bought by the Dutch from the Indians, for sixty guilders or $24, and this only about 250 years ago. And yet, if the purchasers could have securely placed that $24 where it whould have added to the principal annu ally interest at the rate of seven per cent., the accumulation would exceed the present market value of all the real estate of the city and county of New York. Again, if a man at the age of twenty-five should commence busi ness with a capital of $100,000, and could by any possibility add thereto at the rate of seven per cent, annually, the result would be (in round numbers) as follews: Age. Capital. 25 3 100.000 200,000 400,000 800.000 45 55 65 75 85 l.COO.000 3.200,000 U,4W,000 At Portland P. O. Chilstrom, Cornelius Rell, W. C. Gaston and A. C. Singleton recently filed ar ticles of incorporation of the Northern Pacific Land and Immi gration company in the office of the county clerk. The business of the corporation is to buy, sell, lease, improve, etc., etc., real es tate in Oregon, Washington and Montana. The capital stock is $5,000,000. A City "Without Horses. I need not think it necessary to say, except for the matter of fig ures, that Venice is built on seventy-two small islands, in size from an acre upward, formerly soft, muddy deposits through which the rising tide languidly flowed; that it had its origin in the fear of Attila and his northern barbarians, which drove thousands from the mainland to tako shelter in this desolate swamp; that the city transacts its more important commerce almost entirely on the water, having no wheeled vehi cles whatever, and no streets for horses, and no horses, except three that are kept in the museum for the children to sec as a curiosity; that the seventy-two original is lands are now intersected by 147 canals, which are crossed by 30G bridges, reached by steps on either side; that the "streets," so called, which cross these bridges and are traversed by foot passengers, are only four to eight feet wide, squirming everywhere between the houses, and in three or four places, where there is constant and much passing, narrowing to a foot and a half, actually excluding stout per sons from the use of the thorough fare. The gondolas are used for the travel of the few that is, of those who have some money to spend for luxuries-the narrow streets arc used by the man'. Most of the traffic is carried on in the streets. There are no hand-carts, no dog-carts, no wheelbarrows, nothing on wheels. Everything is carried on the head or shoulders or in the hand. I saw a man bearing a quarter of lamb on his naked head for our break fast very likely. Fresh water is received from two sources a little from twenty six artesian wells, but the most from the county, from which it is brought and kept in tanks. It is free to the public only from 9 to 10 and 4 to 5 each day, and sold the rest of the time, and be tween these hours young women may be seen hurrying to and from these reservoirs, with metallic3Tokes across thpir shoulders three feet long, and two-gallon copper buckets born thereon, in which the water is carried. There is only one newspaper in Venice, and one carrier of papers in the streets, and this vender makes a noise between a yelp and a bray a sad but desperate noise, as if his epiglottis had been struck by lightning and he was about to expire in mortal agony. Union County Tragedy. At the Hot Lake house six miles from Union on the 22nd a dance was given which cost H. C. Miller his life, and H. Green a dangerous wound. Some eighteen couple had congregated, and were enjoy ing themselves when a pistol shot rang out, and almost instanta neously Henry Clay Miller cried out; "I'm shot, boys, I'm shot!" It appears that day Miller, Henry Green and Temple Garner entered a room near the dance hall, with a view to getting a drink from a bottle which they had concealed. Searching for their bottle and not finding it, a match was produced and a light struck, when "W. J. Gabriel was discovered with a bot tle in his hand. "That looks like my bottle," said Green. "No it is not," retorted Gabriel; "I paid for it." An effort was then made to get a drink from the bottle, and the match burned out only to be succeeded by a flash, a report and the cry of Clay Miller as above. A second shofc followed the first, but as Mr. Green rushed to the reception room covered with blood he was given all the attention, un- j til Mr. Newhart, the proprietor of the house entered the room where the tragedy secured and stumbled upon the prostrate form of II. C. Miller who was shot through the head and probably instantly killed. The ball that struck Mr. Green entered the flesh near the chenk bone passed throsigh the nose and was extracted from near the ear on the opposite side of his face. The 1'ost says that Gabriel the murderer, after committing the deed, mounted his horse but on being closely pursued jumped to the ground, and on foot made his way to the mountains where he was captured the next morning. No excuse is given other than Ga briel wan ted to be a "bad man," and was spoiling for blood. "I was called out of bed past midnight to go four miles in the country to attend what the mes senger said was a bad case of diphtheria." "And 3'ou went?" "Had to. When I arrived I found a ten-year-old girl crying with a sore throat. I looked into it, asked the girl a few questions and found that she had done a big washing that day. Had a little cold nothing else." "How can you tell the differ ence?" "I'll give you a rule by which 3'ou can always determine," was the response. "If the throat is red and smaller, no fear of diph theria; but if it looks as if some one had thrown a handful of ashes into the throat a dull gray color look out. It's diphtheria's dan ger signal." "The coming metal," as alum inum is called, would almost drive iron out of the market could it be produced at the same cost. The greatest interest is felt in the ca ble report of a discovery of a new process for separating it from the mass of common clay, in which it exists in unlimited quantity, and if its production is made compara tively inexpensive, its introduction will effect marvelous industrial changes. Its lightness and free dom from rust makes it vastly su perior to iron for man purposes. A LETTER &m GERMANY. : . j :c, Jan uary 0, 1S32. Very cnteciucd siis: The praise your Liver Pills.
