As the city begins to fill up for the summer, help and houses grow scarce. D. P. Thompson and R. J. Reeves are establishing h national bank at Baker City. J. W. Watts loses his position as receiver of the Oregon City land office. Mr. Pillsbury succeeds him. The funeral of Andrew Seim who was drowned last Wednesday night, will be at two o'clock this afternoon. Eastern Oregon stock men have had to pay out $100 a day in Borne in stances for feed during tho recent cold snap. The suit of Jas. Turk against tho Orcgonian, for $25,000 for alleged li bel resulted in a verdict for the de fendant. Chas. Mo 9k has purchased an interest in tho business of B. P. Stevens & Co., C. T. Brown retiring from the firm. The Columbia is due from San Francisco this morning with 154 cabin passengers aboard; Gov. Newell, of Washington Territory, among the number. The parties who recently were awarded the contract for building the bridge across the Columbia at Jvalama are about to build a large sawmill at Cathlamet. Work began on the Kalama ex tension of the N. P. JL R. Tuesday, near Columbia City. A gang of 40 Chinamen were put to clearing the track for grading. The Salem Flouring Mills Co. has bought the farmers' warehouse at In dependence and contemplate doing a large storage business there for the use of their mills at Salem and Oregon City. Y. M. C. iV. annual meeting. Election of officers for the ensuing year, this Friday evening at 7 o'clock. A full attendance is requested. Cabc A. Ha-sot, Secretary. Tho foreign exports for January from the Columbia were 294,878 bus. wheat, and 50,257 bbls flour, aggre gating in value S563.48G. February's exports were 100,900 bus. wheat, and 29,490 bbls flour, worth 323,091. In tho police court yesterday, counsel in the case of Geo. Work at the gas works goes on well. The tanks and reservoirs and other outfittings arc being placed, aud pij o is being laid down Main street. The workmen engaged in digging out a trench along tho west side of said thoroughfare, expose some curious formation, just under the surface there being a deposit of trunks of trees curiously arranged in par allel rows, aud constituting a solid road bed through which the sappers and miners with difficult' hewed their wa3 Three steamers camo up stream from below yesterday morning at ten o'clock. The first was tho Walla Walla, loaded deep with a largo cargo of coal from the Sound and floating along in silent majesty, her momen tum carrying her up past the docks to her landing place; next came the gov ernment cutter Corwin, a trim little vessel, whisking merrily along, just from Coos bay and in hero on tempo rary service, and in the rear was the steamer Sam, bound in from Skipa uon and as noisy and saucy as her youthful namesake. Meteorological Register. The following h an extract from the meteorological register of Fort Canby, W. T., for the month of Feb ruary, 1883: Average temperature, 39.00. Maximum temperature, GG.O0, the 20th of February. Minimum temperature, 14.00, dur ing night, from 4th to 5th. of Feb ruary. Average cloudiness, 5. Number of days on which rain, hail and snow fell, 11. Rain, bail and snowfall C in., 33 c c. The month (February) has shown the lowest temperature since the night of January 13th to 14th, 1875, when the thermometer stood at 4 degrees. WnxiAM s. Block. The Corwln. The U. S. revenue cutter Corwin, Capt. Healoy, commander, arrived in yesterday from San Francisco and Empire City, at -which last ; lace was begun an inves;igation into tho loss of the collier Tacoma, on the 29th of last January. The investigation will be concluded here. John Bergman, of this place, who distinguished himself in saving lifo at the scene of tho wreck, and Win, Kyle, who was also there, will appear before Major Blakeney, inspector of the life saving service of this coast and give their testimony, upon the conclusion of which the vessel will return to San Francisco. The Corwin is a. trim little craft, and is the best built of her class on the coast. She is always given a hearty greeting in Astoria, as we look upon her as belonging here. The Richard Rush, at San Francisco, the Oliver Wolcott on the Sound, and the Corwin at Astoria, ia the suppositional distribution, but the fact that the last named is tlifitan chest and most suitable vessel that the government can send on Arctic voyages has alwa3's caused her to be detained for such servico .She will return to S.m Fran cisco on Sunday. The Old Engine. The old hand engine that did good duty in days of yore, but which has for lo these many years reposed in glorious ease beneath the moss-grown roof of the building adjoining tho city hall was yesterday brought out and put through its motions. Like an old race horse, its movements were at first a little jerky, but as the boys who manned the brakes bore down, the "masheen" warmed to its work and sent a solid stream that showed there was plenty of service in tho old veteran yet. Some time ago the city council passed an ordinance to the effect that when a new company was organized in the eastern end of the city tho engine in question with suit able hose should be placed in their charge. We believe step3 are being taken looking to the organization of such company, and as soon as per fected, the machine will be turned over to them. It is the intention of the new company to place the engine in tho vicinity of tho West Coast Packing company's building. At tho request of many patrons I will have Ice cream, Sunday, the 4th insL Fkaxk Faiike. Furnished Rooms to Rent At Mrs. Denny Curran's. On Cass street near Congregational church.
