m ftc Itoila $&xlm AST0K1A. OREGON : I. C. IREIiAN Ectltor. FIUDAY May 1, 1870. Home Again. - Our last correspondence to the readers of Tim Astorian was written iti Salem, from which city we took ; our departure oiuSunday morning, by steamer !&ormnza for Portland, making our first passage through the locks at "Wallamet falls on that day. Again making our headquarters at the Clav endon, Monday and Tuesday were devoted to business and social visits in the metropolis. On Wednesday we reached home, with a clearer vison as to the importance of events transpir ing in the interior, and presuming that oar readers .will want to know what is going on we will endeavor to give our ideas gleaned from various sources. Many moves are now being made upon the grand chess board of life in Oregon. Washington and Idaho, some of which are not explainable, but it is nevertheless true that within the next sixty days contracts will be let, and work begun upon several new lines, and extensions of railway in the great Pacific northwest. 1. The Northern Pac'Oc railway-, which has "been lagging for years, has received extraordinary vitality, and the western line will be commenced, to run eastward from some point above the month of Snake river on the Columbia, and eventually to Puget sound. 1. The Walla Walla and Columbia river railroad will be extended from Whitman station, below Walla Walla, in the direction of Weston, bevond' which point circumstances to trans pire will determine the course. 3. Work will be commenced at some point on the Columbia river below Umatilla, and prosecuted vigorously to a connection with the Utah Northern, already, familiar to our readers, form ing a through lino to Portland, from Ojrden, over the route known as the Portland, Dallesand Salt' Lake road. '.This will very likely be the first througli line forming the much de sired eastern connection. We have faith that t will become an unbroken link in transcontinental traffic, per haps at a Very early period. Pending negotiations with present organic tions, will determine the date. 4. The Oregon Central (west side) railroad will be completed to Corval- lisjforming a junction with the Yaquma bay road to the sea. We understand that arrangements have been agreed upon for the extension. 5. It is possible that the Olympia nd Tenino narrow gauge will be ex pended to the head of navigation on the Chehalis river, a tributary of Gays harbor, thus reaching the coast to the north of th entrance to the Columbia river. This movement is dependent upon certain contingencies. Besides the above there are four narrow gauge -enterprises in the Wal lamet alley commanding attentien: 1. The Dnytou, Sheridan road (Mr. Gastons project), will be extended to Dallas. The final documents to se cure this have been signed. 2. Mr. Pengra's scheme for a nar row guge from Springfield, above Eugene city, to New Era or some point below Oregon city to be deter mined upon hereafter, passing along the base of the foot-lrilis of the Cas cade range, through Brownsville, Sil verton, etc., hinges upon the certainty or the uncertainty of securing a bona Jida subscription of $2,000 per mile from the farmers along the line. The president of this incorporation has issued an address to the people inter ested, in which, among other things, he says that "the company will do nothing further in the matter until this 2,000 per mile is secured;" but it is a noticenblo fact that they did do something further, for upon receiving information that the people at Astoria had incorporated, for tilt purpose of securing connection with the Central Pacific, at Winiemncca, this scheme of Mr. Pengra immediately filed sup plemental articles of incorporation, to extend their projected ro,id to Win semncca from SprkigSeld. And it is a ikarVed circumstance that this is the j first instance in which Astoria has beeft recognized. 3. Articles have been filed for a narrow gauge from Brownsville, via Lebunon to Albanyf and will be feted for a similar road from Silvertori to Salem. These two short lines- ha7e backing, and a prosec5 of sucCe33. Thus we have attempted to briefly outline important works contemplated in the near ftfture for Oregon. As toria is not mentioned in any one of those schemes, real nor visionary. Just wiiat efifecS will result to Astoria from the intentions and purposes of the projectors depends entirely up on movements here. We have not the slightest doubt but that Yaquina bay on one Bide, and Gray's harbor upon the other, are favorably regarded by two wings in this great contest. We know that Astoria, the mouth of the great Columbia river, presents far better inducements than any other point can possibly present, under the most favored circumstances, for the interchange of commodities between 2s ew York and the ports of Asia, for Pacific steamers must be taken into consideration, but Astoria will reap none of the benefits of the present struggle to reach the Pacific co:ist un less this community awakens from its slumbers. It is a good thing to repose confidence in the Almighty; without some divine or God-like attributes we should be poor indeed ; but it should be remembered that the Great Architect of the Universe- helps those who most help themselves, and while it is be3Tond the possibility of any doubt that nature has done more for Astoria than any other point on the whole coast of the Pacific ocean, man must also do something, and in the organization of the Astoria and Win nemucca Railroad company the first great step lias been taken. As a " community, we should now put our hands down into our pockets, and affix our signatures to bonds for deeds to a portion of our landed estates, and assume the attitude of "the cheerful giver," holding ourselves at all times ready to extend a hearty and substan tial welcome to fAe first company, or corporation or individual, who may be ready to pledge themelves, or himself, to take hold of it, and rarer let up, until Astorians can shake hands with the balance of the people on this continent across the track of the standard gauge, stocked for business. If we are afraid, or fail to show our hands now, the golden opportunity for Astoria will surely pass by for a full decade, and per haps for another quarter of a century. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. LOST.
