Well A KUJIiMATEXtt- IISP.AY. Salt Lake City Virtually In KcbcllfoH. Special to the Oregonian. Salt Lake, May G. At 9:30 this morning Justice Emerson charged the jury in the Miles po lygamy case. They retired to their room, and after an absence of ten minutes returned with a ver dict of guilty. He will receive sentence on Friday, but in the mean time amotion has been made for a new trial, and the prisoner has been placed under $5,000 bonds .pending the motion. The verdict was received with applause, and United States Attorney Van Zele was warmly congratulated for the sible manner in which lie conducted die case Miss 0veus was present, .and received the announcement of "guilty" with great pleasure. :re ssarking to :a reporter that .she looped the sentence would be hard Jabor for life. The prospects for .a jicw trial are extremely doubtful, but an appeal will .be takeu. The case is so clear that no one doubts the result. Whilethe verdict was being announced, another remark able event was transpiring on the outside. Daniel II. Wlls, first counsellor of the Mormon church, was being escorted from the Utah penitentiary to the city by thous ands ifithe faithful, who had been summoned from all sections -of the territory to manifest their dis pleasure at Wells' incarceration for contempt of court. There were between 600 and 700 men, women and children in line, on foot, on horseback and in wagons, while the sidewalks were crowded with spectators. The American flag was plentifully sand wiched between banners covered with treasonable mottoes, a hu miliating sight to Americans who had fought and bled for their country. It was a raotely crowd, composed mostly of foreigners, many of them unnaturalized, and none of them Americanized, and as ignorant of the laws of the land as so many cattle, all willing tools in the hands of as unscrupulous a lot of scoundrels as erer scuttled a ship or cut a throat. As they filed by the federal court house, deafening yells went up, and Wells, who sat in a car riage with John Taylor, president of the Mormon church, ssood up and waived his hat, and ten bands lent their discordant notes to the treasonable din. Old soldiers and law-abiding citizens say .they have seen or heard nothing equal to this treasonable demonstration since the opening fire on Fort Sumter. After the parade the crowd was harangued at the tabernacle and banqueted at the -expense of the city. TELEGRAPHIC NEWS. Eastern States.
