Letters From tlio People Caution Probably you arc not 51 ware that this city is setting overrun with a lot of hard-up gamblers, that are ready like vultures to nrey on the fisher men and actually rob them of their hard earned monies. Doing that it is an of fense against the laws, why don't the iitv auihoi ities put a stop to it and give xhem notice to quit ? They can be found anv night in the variety saloons as large and open, in spite of the laws. On the lGth of September, 184G, Geo. W. Evans discovered the gold mines of California. We have abuud ant proofs to substantiate this fact, and have before this referred to the circum stances through these columns. Evans was not so careful of himself, and his finances, as he should have been; and when the day arrived for liim to pay the last, great debt due to nature he yielded up the ghost a pauper in As toria, Oregon, and now sleeps the long sleep of death in an unhonored grave, in the potters field of this city. Attracted by a statement of the mil iums of bullion taken from the gold fields of the Pacific states and terri tories, published in The Astoriax re cently, Uncle David Ingalls called upon us yesterday to inquire if it were not possible to take some step to aire for and mark this sadly neglected grave? The suggestion is a good one, and we move that Wells, Fargo it Co. and the Pioneer and Historical socie ties of California, Oregon, Washing ton, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, etc., appoint committees to work the mat ter up. At a sale of the few personal effects of poor Evans, after his death and burial in Astoria, his private pa pers, etc., fe.ll into the hands of Mr. W. H. Twilight, and have been care fully preserved. We presume that these p ipers would be cheerfully sur rendered to any property organised committee who might desire to secure them for so laudable purpose. In view of the untold wealth resulting from the discovery of gold in Califor nia in 184G, and the mistaken theories concerning the rightful person to whom the honors of being the discov erer belongs, we ask that the press of this country take up the subject, and secure the necessary action.
