SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 2017 3 A Community invited to Coast HOT RODS TO SHINE AT 10TH ANNUAL RODS ’N RHODIES Florence will be in top gear show award for the vehicles Guard City Designation and revved-up for the 10th starts at noon on Sunday. The City of Florence and U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River plan to cele- brate Florence’s new Coast Guard City designation, and the community members who helped make it possible, with a reception open to the public on Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. The community is encour- aged to come hear about how Florence became a Coast Guard City, what this means and to meet members of the community who have helped to achieve this goal. The city will receive the official designation as a Coast Guard City from the admirali- ty of the U.S. Coast Guard at this event. A formal program will begin at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be avail- able. “We are excited for this cel- ebration and encourage mem- bers of the community to join us in celebration,” said city intern Claire Waggoner. Florence Mayor Joe Henry and other dignitaries will pro- vide comments about this des- ignation during the formal pro- gram. The event is open to all who would like to attend. Then, Station Siuslaw River is holding an open house immediately following the Coast Guard City Designation. SEA, an all-volunteer non- profit organization, relies on ticket sales, patrons, sponsors and grants to enable it to pro- duce its shows at the Florence Event Center (FEC). In addition to the seven shows at the FEC, SEA spon- sors a Community Enrichment Program for students, residen- tial care facilities and veterans in the Florence community. SEA works closely with local schools in selecting and coordination performing arts events as part of its operating budget, including Living Voices, an education theater company which performs at the Siuslaw Elementary and Middle schools.
