Florence man sentenced to 10 years for child porn B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Florence resident Brian Lee Yoakum, 37, was arrested by Florence Police in May for suspicion of col- lecting child pornography and encouraging child sexual abuse. An investiga- tion was launched in January follow- ing several tips from people familiar with Yoakum who expressed suspi- B ri a n Le e cions that Yoakum had obtained and collected child pornography on his com- puter, according to Lane County Prosecutor Bob Lane. Yoakum had received pro- bation in 2010 on a similar charge after child pornography was found on a laptop that Yoakum had brought in for repairs. He received two years of probation after pleading guilty and was required to reg- ister as a sexual offender as well as attend treatment. Public defender Robert Kaiser, who represented Yoakum on the most recent charges, said that the 37-year- old had attended some of the required treatment program sessions but had stopped going due to the hardship of travel- ing between Florence and Eugene. Kaiser also suggested that a State, county police respond to dual calls in Mapleton Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and other emergency agen- cies responded to two calls in Mapleton on Thursday, Aug. 10, once to arrest a person on a warrant and the other in response to a suicide by gun on Highway 36. Investigations are ongoing at this point. COURTS Florence Municipal Court July 25 Joshua Michael Brown pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of possession of methampheta- mine. He was sentenced to 20 days in Florence City Jail. David Jeremiah Meyers pleaded no contest to the crime of menacing. He was sentenced to 10 days in Florence City Jail. He must pay $530 in fines and not contact or be in the resi- dence or place of the victim. Melvin Bryce Lytle pleaded guilty to one count of criminal trespass. He must pay a fine of $525 and not contact or be in or about the residence of the victim. August 1 Jessica Erin Fowler pleaded no contest to the crime of harassment. She must pay $525 in fines and not contact or be in or about the residence of the victim. Kristopher Dean Davis pleaded guilty to the crime of Theft. He was sentenced to three days in the Florence City Jail. He must pay a fine of $330. developmental disability played a role in Yoakum’s actions. Yoakum admitted to detec- tives that he had obtained the pornographic materials and pro- vided detectives with an iPad con- taining hundreds of images. The inves- tigation also turned up a binder full of images of child sexual abuse that had been printed and collected. After pleading Yo ak um guilty to the most recent charges, which include 10 felony counts of first-degree encour- agement of child sex abuse, Yoakum was sentenced to 123 months — or 10 years — by Lane County Circuit Judge Suzanne Chanti on Thursday.
