COAST GUARD STATION SIUSLAW RIVER FLORENCE BECOMES COAST GUARD CITY TODAY Designation ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at Florence Events Center B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News D uring the Aug. 7 Florence City Council meeting, Mayor Joe Henry proclaimed Aug. 16 as Florence Coast Guard City Day. As he began reading the procla- mation, Henry thanked the “brave personnel” of U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. “This is a really exciting day for the City of Florence,” Henry said. “I’m very proud and hum- bled by all the attention we’ve gotten and the support of our local Coast Guard station, not just for this recognition but for the things they do on our river and miles of coastline.” The Coast Guard and City of Florence are holding a Coast Guard City Designation Celeb- ration today at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with a formal presentation at 11 a.m. The community is invited. Afterward, Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River, 4255 Coast Guard Road, is hosting an open house from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Community members are invit- ed to park at the events center and shuttle to the station. The Coast Guard and the city will have a designation celebration today, Aug. 16, at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., from 10:30 a.m. to noon, followed by an open house at Station Siuslaw River until 4 p.m. of work by Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 52 members, volunteers, Western Lane Emergency Operations Group, the City of Florence and Oregon Coast Military Museum. During the celebration, Rear Admiral David Throop, com- mander of Coast Guard District 13, will speak. “Over the past 100 years, the community has rallied around and accepted the men and women of the Coast Guard as their own,” Throop said. “The support of communities like Florence is essential in helping our crews and families to be ready at all times. We are happy to be able to high- light these local efforts by desig- nating Florence a Coast Guard City.” See CITY 7A Florence Police Depart- ment is currently assisting the Dallas, Ore., Police Depart- ment with an investigation into the disappearance of 37- year-old Heather Mounce Davison on Aug. 12. Davison has been missing Heather Mounce since midday on Saturday and Davison is believed to have traveled to Florence earlier that day, on her own, before she disappeared. Dallas Police reported that Davison had been seen at her home in Dallas on Saturday morning. Davison’s car was located Saturday afternoon, just north of Florence at milepost 180 on Highway 101, by members of the Oregon State Police. Davison’s cell phone was located about 400 feet from her empty automobile. Family members filed a missing persons report with the Dallas Police Department on Saturday, prompting the agency to initiate and lead the inves- tigation into Davison’s disappearance. On Saturday morning just after 10 a.m., 16-year-old Haley Wells Haley Wells was riding on an ATV with a family member along a Bureau of Land Management road just off of Rice Road in Mapleton when Wells was thrown from the vehicle and over an embankment. Wells, whose helmet came loose during the fall, was brought up from the embankment but was not breathing. Family members administered CPR until first responders from Mapleton Fire and Rescue arrived, but Wells never regained consciousness. Looking at their unassuming building on the corner of Rhododendron Drive and Highway 101, one could be forgiven for not knowing the treasures hidden inside. Many of those treasures will be on display at the 20th annual Florence Coin Show, running Aug. 19 and 20 at the Florence Events Center (FEC). In fact, it’s the second longest running show at the FEC, just a few months shy of the Home and Garden Show. George helped start the coin show with Dennis Hankins. “When they were talking about building the FEC, peo- ple were trying to come up with ideas for it. I volun- teered without thinking,” he said. Twenty years later, it’s still going strong.
