From a Boiso city paper wo learn that a shoemaker by thu mi mo of Clarence McSweeney became intoxica ted, and while in that condition, laid down on the floor of his loom, and was found chilled through and his limbs frozen. Ho died a few hours after ward. This is, without doubt, tho McSwceney who formerly resided in Union. Mr. Boothe of this city is in receipt of a letter from E. R. Simpson, of John's Town, Jay Gould camp, Lewis A Clarke Co., Montana, stating that a lady Mrs. S. E. Boltinghouhe, died at that placo on tho filh inst., from the t'flectswf quinzy. Nothing is known of where her relatives are living. As Mr. Simpson desires to communicate with them, information will bo thank fully received. Outhouse, receiver at the La Grande office, is confined to his room. Attorney Shelton left, yesterday, on a business trip to La Grande and Pen dleton. Mr. J. N. Smith, of Island city, made this office a pleasant visit last Monday. Hon. George Chandler, of Baker county, was in the city the fore part of tho week. Senator Rinehart and family icturn cd, from Malhuer county, tho fore part of the week. Mavrhme license issued this week to E. T. PeebL-r and Mies Annie Walker, of La Grande. An amateur dramatic club of Walla Walla will start out toon for a tour of Eastern Oregon towns. Mr. II. J. Geer, of the Cove, mado us a pleasant and substantial visit the fore part of the week. Mrs. J. R. Reeves, of Telocaset, was in town, Tuesday, and made the Scout otlic a pleasant visit. Mr. M.L. Carter, of Island city, paid l he Scout office a pleasant visit tho fore part of the week. Mr. II. B. Drake and family, who have been visiting in the east for tome time, returned last Friday. The social dance at Davis' hall last Fridav night was not largely attended, , no doubt on account of tho inclement : weather. Mr. Philahon, who has been teaching I school at Big creek, passed through I Union, Wednesday, en route for Port ! land. Mr. S. T. Ulm was in town tho fore part of the week, on his way to the laud office to prove up on his pre emption claim. According to tho Ailingtuu Times the bachelors of Long creek are raising a fund to send east for a caiload of unmarried ladies. Mr. Gus Hutchinson left for Powder river this week. Before leaving, how ever, he ordered his cognomen placed on (air subscription list. Mr. Jos. Dolby, of Big creek, called on us yesterday. He is as jovial as ever. At the Centennial hotel in this city, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 1888, Mr. Chas. F. Chattin and Mies Maria NcBeth, Rev. Irwin officiating. It is quite probable that a number of La Grande people will attend tho Knights of Pythias hall at Union on the 17th of next February. Gazette. Marshall Woodard received a tele gram last Monday, stating that his father, who resides at Milton, Umatilla 'ounty, was dangerously sick. Ho im mediately went over. Vice-President T. J. Potter of the Union Pacific left Wednesday night for his homo in Burlington, Iowa, to remain there, away from tho pressure of business, until ho regains his health, which has been very poor for the past month.
