Cusiek and family, of Clover creek, tire visiting relatives in 1'yle canyon this week. Albert Yowcll is slowly recovering from his severe nttnek of lung fever. IJcv. Yonkurn and family, of Sum merville, passed through our neigh borhood a few days ago. The weather is so nice that wo tiro expecting a robin overy day; and the squirrels will surely be out very soon. The road down the canyon is almost impassable, yet. The snow drifted in to deep that it will take a good many days of sunshine to thaw them out. We liavo a good school in Pyle can yon this winter. We are very glad to havo the privilege of saying tin's, as good schools are tho making of a good country. Ettie II. Elgin Echoes. Still it rains, Tho farmers have plenty of feed yet. Mrs. A. J. Patten, of Sumrnerville, paid a visit to our town last, week. The mercury is eaid to havo dropped to frl degrees below zero during the coldest weather here. The miners wish the storm would break up, as thoy aro anxious to Htart work on their claims. W. II. Hill has just completed his fancy cutter, which is the finest ever put up in tho valley. We havo one saloon, and another will probably start soon. Wo think tho town would bo better oh" without any. January was certainly a peculiar month this year. It brought heavy snow fall and extended cold weather, yet at the end of the mouth tho snow is gone, toads tiro dry and plowing is commenced. Mrs. A. Iv. Kiggs, of Portland, presi dent of the Women's Christian Tem perance I'nion of this State, will bo in Covo Feb. 15th. to organize a union at this place. She will hold meetings for a week or more, to which all are invi ted. Admission free. She expects to visit all tho towns in the county. The Cove Dairy Association ordered this week from Chicago a ten-horse power engine and all necessary ma chinery and appliances for manufac turing first grade butter and cheese. As soon as tho order arrives and is placed in position in their new factory milk will bo received and work com menced. The Count of Serano was played by members of tho Episcopal schools, Monday evening, to a fair audience. The performance-, generally, was good, and the plot could' easily bo followed through. Several solos were very well rendered and were a credit to the mu sic teachers of the schools, uUo to tho managers of the drama. W.W. White, of Wallowa, county, was in town this week, lie says a Na tional bank will ho organized at En terprise in the spring, K. M. Stcelo the capitalist taking a greater part of the stock. Feb. 2S, 180S, making his ago at lime of death' 79 years, 11 months and 3 days. Accompanied by his wife in his ninny moves, lie crossed tho plains in JSf)2 and settled in Douglas county, Mr. Mitchell has been gradually fail ing in health since his wife's death, which occurred about one year njjo. The school in tlie Middle district has closed until warmer weather on account of the house being very open, and hence very cold. Miss Clarke, the teacher in the Up per district, is giving good satisfaction. She is a good teacher and is laboring earnestly for the advancement of tlie school. Mr. W. T. Burdette, of Cornucopia, is sojourning in our midst. He is one of tho largest mine owners in Cornu copia and is using all his influence to make it a .prosperous camp. Stock is looking well antl it is the opinion of stock men that this will not bo us hard a winter as lust. Plenty of hay for winter feeding is all that U neeesstuy, and many men havo found out this fact to their sorrow. A county road has been surveyed through this place near the center. This is a useful road, easily built, and when completed will add greatly to the uppearunco of tho vullov. Last Fall tho citizens, commenced the build ing of a road up Summit creek. Wo understand that thoy have now peti tioned for a county road there. Wo hope they will succeed as it will short en the distance to Cornucopia and bo a very pleasant road to travel in Sum mer. A few days since, wc arc told, R. A. Whittikcr's foreman endeavored to take some hay from the bam belong ing to Wm. Whittiker. Win. appeared oh the scene aud forbade them from trespassing, but while ho was keeping them away upon ono side they suc ceeded in gaining an entrance on tho other. We understand the men were all armed, antl if Wm. pushes the case, which ho has already gone to Baker to do, wo fear it will not terminate so pleasantly for the assailants. The truth qf the matter is, H. A. Whittiker has gone to England and left his busi ness in the hands of his creditors (Bascho ik, Co.) who do not know tho exact truth as to whom tho lnty does belong, but Wm. has all tho chance in tho world to make it pretty hot for Mr. Foreman. ' We have threo stores in this valley. All claim to be doing a nourishing bus iness. Dad town (we think- that is what they cull it) has two merchants about sixty years old, who are continu ally on batl terms. If ono wells whis key the other will get license and sell whiskey also. At present only ono is soiling tho beverage, but wo find there is about as much drunkeness as when both sold. It is getting so that wo can not have n littlo party without a gallon or two is on hand and someone full. AVc wish to say right here, young man, it is no credit to any of you to be seen with a largo bottle in your pocket, como staggering into tho ball room. The girls will not think as much of you and wo know tho old folks will not. Take warning in time aud save your reputation, and by so doing you will maintain your honor and man hood. Mr. Joo Basset, our other merchant, who keeps near the residence of Joseph Beck, we understand is to bo post master in u few days, Mr. Beck resign ing. Low Jennings is to bo deputy and also Notary Public. On account of tho death of Wm. Beck, boh of our worthy P, M., tho duty of post master has fallen entirely upon him who is now an old man, and without tho assistance of that over dutiful ton, tho strain was more than ho could stand. Mr. Beck Iihb made us a good P. M., and wo sincerely regret that we must loso him. He has endeavored to the utmost of his ability to pleaso each and all, though in somo few cases ho has failed becauBa somo people will growl at anything, right or wrong. Wo kindly thank Mr. Beck for his fa vors as a P. M., and hope that his re maining days may bo spent in pcaco and happiness.
