Judge Parker's Cletter of acceptance, including his gold standard-telegram, must be -tqually a correct and authorita tive statement of Democratic principles, policies and purposes. Vhy not? He is a Hie-long Democrat. He voted for Bryan and free-coinage. Cleveland and Hill and Belmont vouch for the -44simon pure" quality ot his Democracy. So sure were they oi this they were able to induce 'the convention to pass over such doubtful Democrats as Gorman, Bryan and Hearst and give the nomination to Parker. Little wonder that our plain, 3bonest, every-day Democrat is -.mystified, perplexed. He turns to the history of his party to learn -what Democracy really is, and .finds that for quite forty years the party has had no definite r principles and no policies but ttybse ot negation and obstruc tion. On last Sunday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock at the family resi dence occurred the funeral dis course of Mrs. Mary M. McLagan, preached by Kev. liawara r. Green of the Congregational church. The last sad rites were observed at the I. O. O. F. ceme tery where the remains were laid in the final resting place. Mrs. McLaean was ill but a tew days, having taken sick suddenly on Tuesday, the 16th insL, and orown gradually worse until the end, which came oh Friday morn- ing at 11 o'clock on ner 77m hirthdav. She had been in poor health for many years and had home her infirmities with patient courage and Christian fortitude, but her advanced age made re covery ratner ooudiiui. jur. McLagan was born near Bath Steuben county, New York, Aug. 26, 1827. While quite young she emigrated with her parents locating near bvcamore, JJeJs.aiD county, 111. where she resided for manv vears and wnere sne married Wm. McLagan, Nov. 20, tRiR. Mrs. McLaean is tne last of a family of ten children April 15, 1852 Mr. and Mrs McLaean lett Sycamore tor ure pon in a wao-on drawn by oxen, arriving in Portland Oct. 15 just six monhts later. In Marcn, i53 they came to Corvallis wnere m thev have resided most ot tne y time since. Eight children were born to Mr. and jMrs. McLagan, six of whom are living and witn a nus band remain to mourn her loss. The daughters are Mrs. Ida L. Spencer and Mrs. A. M. Tucker of Corvallis, and May is,. Motley of Core. Oreeon. One son, Rollo A. McLagan resides here, anoth er son, O. C. McLagan, is in Al aska, while a .third, Douglas Mc Lagan, resides in caatornia. Will Test Local Option Law. The constitutionality of the local-option law will be tested in the courts of Multnomah county, and a bill of complaint will be . 1 filed soon by persons interested in defeating the law. It wil take the form of a suit ' to enjoin Countv Clerk Fields from sub mitting the question to the voters t at the election in iMOvemoer whether liquors shall be sold" in Multnomah county, as petitioned tor by I. H. Amos and 527 others, principally members of the " Pro hibition pirty. The petition fil ed demands that the clerk shall place on the ballot the question of prohibition to be answered yes or no. The attorneys who are prepar ing the injunction suit do not de sire at this time to state what points they will make against the constitutionality of the law, any more than to say that it will be attacked from all sides.
