Kent returned Thurs day from Southern Oregon where he has been in the interests of the ex periment station at OAC. and also doing some special work tor tne u S. government. Prof. Kent spent some time in both Jackson and Klamath counties and his work was larcrelv of an experimental' nature along irrigating lines; studying the amount ot water, ootainahie acreage to be atlected, rate ot nowage, etc. Plans are on foot to irrigate 100,000 acres of arid land. Chesley fell to the ground fainting and bleeding profusely, whereupon Read jump ed upon him and kicked him unmercifully and was assisted by another voung fellow who works about the same saloon, whose name was Dotv. The town marshal who is abont 6o vears ot age.- deputized tw assistants and went to arrest Rea who turned unon the old man with his knife and threatened to kill him if he came near, thrust ing his hand into his pocket also with a threat that ne wouia snoot him. The marshal in pure self- dofnre and in the name ot the law drew his revolver and shot Read through the head, the ball entering the neck on the left side and coming out through tne right cheek. Reid fell seriously wounded, and is still anve, Dut may not recover. The bullet entered the neck within one sixteenth of am inch of the carotid artery, a severing of which means certain death. Chesley is still at Newport and although badly wounded he will recover if gangrene does not set in. Public sentiment is against T?ead who is supposed to have been the cause of it Complaints have been heard of the inadequate police force at Newport this sum mer.
