The New York Times, one of
the leading Democratic papers of
.New York City, characterizes tne
ti iterances in fudge Patker's
letter of acceptance relating to
the Tariff as "Old. tiresome,
nerveless, spineless rigmarole."
Brother Parker.s daily prayer
.oupht to be "deliver me-from
o
.my friends."
To the plain every-day Demo
crat the beautiful lack of harmony
Tetween the party platform and
nominee Parker's letter of accept
ance must be the source of great
perplexity. The platform must
surely express the principles,
policies and purposes of the gieat
Democratic party. It was form
filiated by the mighty and wise
anen of the party, assembled for
that purpose. Judge Parker's
Cletter of acceptance, including his
gold standard-telegram, must be
-tqually a correct and authorita
tive statement of Democratic
principles, policies and purposes.
Vhy not? He is a Hie-long
Democrat. He voted for Bryan
and free-coinage. Cleveland and
Hill and Belmont vouch for the
-44simon pure" quality ot his
Democracy. So sure were they
oi this they were able to induce
'the convention to pass over such
doubtful Democrats as Gorman,
Bryan and Hearst and give the
nomination to Parker.
Little wonder that our plain,
3bonest, every-day Democrat is
-.mystified, perplexed. He turns
to the history of his party to learn
-what Democracy really is, and
.finds that for quite forty years
the party has had no definite
r principles and no policies but
ttybse ot negation and obstruc
tion. Its brief lease of power
-within that time but emphasized
'its unfitness to conduct the gov
ernment and caused the Ameri-

Will Test Local Option Law.
The constitutionality of the

filed soon by persons interested
in defeating the law. It wil
take the form of a suit ' to enjoin

principally members of the " Pro

of prohibition to be answered yes

The attorneys who are prepar
ing the injunction suit do not de
sire at this time to state what
points they will make against the
constitutionality of the law, any
more than to say that it will be
attacked from all sides. The
matter of testing the law has been
