C. with a view to getting an industrial education, is expect ing a young Japanese student to join him here in a short time. Mr. Mukerji expresses himself as being well pleased with O. A. C. The Corvallis Iriri Department boys are becoming quite proficient in "their daily drills. We very much tloubt if another city -f equal size can produce a better one. The challanges sent out for competitors for the 4th of July celebration have s yet not been taken up. Fireworks, Fireworks, Fireworks, at Hodes' gun store. During the recent picnic of the. Linn county pioneers at Browns ville, the Philomath male quartette rendered valuable service. This quartette is one of the very best in the state and is composed of Messrs O. V. and Heroert White, Whitten .aud Carey. Extra hand-made shoes at J. Senger. There is to he a grand 4th of July celebration down on the lower Alsea. The principal feature of the day will be a base ball game between the "cascara peelers" and the "chittim skinners." The peel ers are the old residents and the skinners the newcomers. T. T. Vincent will make the eagla scream. According to custom the three ladies receiving the' highest number of votes in the Goddess of Liberty contest will act as Goddess of Liber ty, Goddess of Peace and Goddess of Plenty, for the celebration, July 2. 3, 4. Miss Grace Hufi will represent the first, Miss Elsie Dilley the second and Miss Lulu Spangler the third. The most attractive display of fireworks is at A. Hodes. The finest display of fireworks and the most attractive decoration made therefrom is to be found at Hodes' gun store. The window ar rangement was especially designed and constructed by Mrs. Hodes from great quantities of Chinese fire crackers, stacks upon 6tadks of sky rockets, whirligigs, Roman candles, Japanese bombs etc. Go around and take a look at it. Hayes, of Portland, Miss Elsie Anna Bates and Raymond Wilton Simeral, two former O. A. C. stud ents, were unitnd in marriage. As the first strains of the bridal hymn from '"Lohengrin" were played by Miss Eva McAllister, four young women entered the room, bearing an arch of white ribbons, under which the bridal procession march ed, taking position under a cadopy of ferns and ribbons, tied in . true lovers' knots. The front parlor was embellished with ferns and rosebuds. The diningroo.ii and hall were in red- v -The , bride s bouquet was caught by Miss-Sibyl Cummings. Horner was a west bound p&sseuger on the C. & E. Friday . Mrs. H. F. Fisher who has been absent for about three weeks at Boswell Springs returned last Fri day very much benefitted. Dr. James Withycombe has been spending some time in Polk coun ty examining hop yards and other wise studying the agricultural con ditions. Miss Adelaide Greffoz, of Port land, sister of Police Judge Greffoz, of this city, contemplates visiting friends here and elsewhere '.iuriug July and August. A. E. Kisor returned from Port land Friday, where he had been attending the Oregon Pioneer Asso ciation. Mr. Kisor crossed the plains with his parents in '52. E. S. Hornaday is moving to bis ranch near Nashville. Mrs. Hornady and children went Fri day and Mr. Hornady will follow in a few days. J. C. Clark, who has been our able O. A. C. correspondent for the last three months, expects to leave tomorrow for his home in Logan, Clackamas county. Among those from Corvallis to attend the Linn County Pioneer's picnic at Brownsville last week were W. E. Yates, wife and daugh ter, Joseph Yates and J. Senger. A report has been received from Mossy Rock, "Washington, that Mr. Jennings a young man Jiving in Kings Valley, eloped last week with the daughter of a prominent farmer of that place. Who wants to ride in the Liberty Car? The committee want forty- two girls to ride iu the Fourth of July procession on the Liberty Car. Call at once on Mrs. B. W. John son and make arrangements. Among the prize winners in the recent contest held by the San Francisco Examiner were Geoige Dixon and Mr. Barker of Corvailis. George received a fine $60 shot gun and Mr. Barker a $6.00 fishing rod. Saturday a yery pleasant lawn party was given at the beautiful country home of George Armstrong, four miles west of here. George has one of the prettiest country homes to be found anywhere. Mrs. H. W. Hall and children left Friday for a two weeks visit with Mrs. Stiwer in Jefferson. Mr. Hall. expects to leave today for Portland.jwhere he has secured a position. The man' friends of these estimable people very much regret their departure. Miss Katherine Turney, formerly a highly prized instructress in the public schools of this city, has been elected to a very responsible and lucrative position in the public schools of Las Angeles. Miss Tur uey is a sister Ruthyn Turney, in structor of the violin at the O. A. c, Ira B. Wade and bride were on the west-bound C. fe E. train Fri day, returning from a wedding tour to Portlaud and other points. Mr. Wade is clerk of- Lincoln county, and is well known to many people in here. He attended school at both Philomath and O. A. C, and is one of the most popular young men of Lincoln county. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. M. Borgen, and is one of the beat of . Lincoln county's daughters. She is possessed of a winning, amiable, sunny disposition that un doubtedly wins for her a place in the hearts of all who learn to know her. The event has been an ticipated for some thre and was not a surprise to their many friends The happy event was consummated last Sunday a week ago, R9v. C . M. Marks, of South Dakota, has purchased a farm on Soap Crt;ek and moved out Saturday. Real estate agent, Jas Lewis, effected the transfer. Dr. Altmau, we are very sorry to state will leave Coryallis about the, labt of July to take up his residence in Saiem . He will take the office and practice of Dr. Eschei man who goes to Portland. Mrs. Katherine Wade, of Sum merville, Oregon, whose eon, Walter attended the College last year, has rented a house here with a view to making this place her residence until her son completes his course. The infant son of Wm . Newton, died yesterday at Portland. The fun eral will be held at the residence of Grandfather Newton on 4th street today, at 2 o'clock. Rev M Noble officiating. Mr. Flett has been down there for the past two weeks re turned Saturday, purchasing a span of horses at a sale in Philo math Their furnished residence is for rent to, desirable parties. A good likeness of president-elect of Philomath College, I E Caldwell appears in the Sunday Oregonian. Pres. Caldwell is a product of Ne braska, having been born in that state in 1873. He is a graduate of York College, York, Nebraska, and his parents reside at Swanson of that state. He was professor of mathematics in Philomath last year and the year preceding and has won his way into the hearts of every one who has ever been under his tutel age. Claud Gatch is carrying around a bandaged and a painful eye that has been under the care of the doc tor for a day or two. It came about, from handling of paper money at the Ladd & Bush bank, where Mr. Gatch is employed and has been for many years. Mr. Gatch is usually very careful in the hand ling of paper money, as all bank people who are acquainted with its danger But this time he rubbbed his eye after counting a package of "green backs" and conveyed a germ thereto which caused the soreness, requir ing the attention of a physician and the bandage.
