TWO UiSASTROlS f.8S. Carrier and Keeley Residences Totally Destroyed. Iast Sunday morning J he old Currier residence near Ioavale was burned to tae ground. This was one of the most beautiful country residences in Benton county and is known far and wide. The beautiful shade trees that formed such a natural and artistic adornment are su burned lhat they will die. Dick Scott, who runs the Cur si place was dressing Sunday aaozning and wnile making his toilet had occasion to go into an nnsed closet for some aruc.e sad carried a lighted lamp. He 5ei2 the room ior a few moments nd returned to find smoke issu ing out. It is supposed . the fire caught upon some of the draperies sr clothing or the lamp, which was left upon the table bad ex ploded,, but just a short interval feat! elapsed between his leaving the room and the cry of fire. There was a large force of men tm hand but so rapidly and sav agely did the flames spread that all efforts to extinguish the liaises proved futile. A few valuables- were saved but prac tically the loss is complete. The re began in the back part of the hoose and what articles were saved were from the parlor and sitting room. All kitchen utensils- were lost. The wood shed Tyhkh joined the main building was- also destroyed. Had it not fceess for the heroic . efforts of Shose present, the barn which was vuy sixty feet away would also ave gone Another fire occurred early last week out in the hills, ten or twelve miles from Corvallis near George Mannings, totally de stroying the residence of Mr. IZeeJey. The little six-year-old girl of Mr. Keeley displayed an act of true hero-sm in saving her "baby brother from an awful death. The father and mother were away at the time of the fire at a neighbors grinding ' a scythe. The little girl discovered the fiite and ran into the bedroom where her little brother was asleep upon the bed, and carried him out and over to Mr. Manning's, where the patents were. The father re tamed to find the house too far ;one to save anything exctpt a few minor articles. The fire was caused by a defective flue. The family has but recently arrived from the East and spent all their mosey in buying the place and are in destitute circumstances. The little girl is a genuine hero ineand-is the object of much adoration by neighbor. A subs cription is being taken up io l.elp Ifce family out. All who c'esiie io help can give the same to Rev. Andrew Carrick or Mrs.' S. N. Wilkins. Goddess of Liberty Contest. Miss Grace Huff will represent the Goddess of Liberty on July 4th. Miss Huff is one of the most popular young ladies in Benton county. She is at present one of the most highly prized school teachers in the city. Her popularity and tea sty are uuquestioned and un challenged. The result of the contest meets with the greatest public approval and enthusiasm. Miss Huff Resides a few miles est of Corvallis. Norris Humphrey well known to many in, this city, having mar ried Miss Grace Hanna, aCor vallis lady, went insane at? his home in Eugene last VweefcV-and was taken to the state institu tion at Salem. He was a well known oichardist -and. - became suddenly deranged while work iug among his trees last Wednes day. He was taken before judge Kincaid and an examining board and pronounced insane. '"The judge ordered him committed to the asylum. Deputies Harry Bown and George Hunter left on the afternoon train for Salem with the unfortunate man in their keeping. At the station Mr. Humpurey exhibited much stress of mental excitement. He paced up and down the platform, talk ing in a delirious manner. It is said that financial re verses are the cause of Mr. Hum phrey's mental distress. At one time he was rated as one of the wealthiest residents of the coun ty, but a series of losses have made him a poor man. His de rangement took the form of a suicidal mania and restraint be came necessary to prevent self inflicted bodily harm. It is thought that perfect rest and quiet will bring about a per manent cure, as his derangemer t is believed to be but temporary. Mr. Humphrey is about fifty years of age and resided with his family in the outskirts of Eugene. Death of an Old-Time Printer. Denard Montague, at one time a compositor on the Corvallis Gazette, died on Friday, in East Portland at the age of 63 years. He was born in Illinois, and was apprenticed to the print er's trade at the age of 12 years. During his life he was the editor and owner of a number of publi cations. Mr. Montague came to the Coast in 1885, and went to Los Angeles where he worked at his trade for several years. Leaving there he came to Oregon where he has been connected with newspapers in different parts of the state. Up to a few weeks before his death he was em ployed in the composing-room of the Columbia River and Oregon Timberman, which position he had held for five years. In all of his duties he was ever a con scientious and devoted man. During the War of the Rebel lion Mr. Montague saw much service. He enlisted in 1861 in the First Missouri Regiment for three months. He then re-enlisted for three years and fought under General Schofield. Mr. Montagne came from a long line of noble and distin guished English ancestry, and could trace his lineage back to one of the famous Forty Knights who came to England with Wil liam the Norman, A. D. 1066. The funeral will be held under the auspices of the G. A. R., of which organization the deceased was an enthusiastic member. Formal Notification July 27. For nearly four years I suffered from ovarian troubles. The doc tor insisted on an operation as the only way to get well. 1, however, strongly objected to an operation. My husband felt disheartened as well as I, for home with a sick woman- is a disconsolate place at best. , A friendly druggist advised him to get a bottle of Wine of Cardui for me to try, and he did so. I began to improve in a few days and my recovery was very rapid. With in eighteen weeks I was another being. - Mrs. Stowe's letter shows every fel woman now a nome is saddened by female weaknes and how completely Wine of Cardui cures that sick ness and brings health and happi ness again. Do not go on suffer ing. Go to your druggist today and secure a $1.00 bottle of Wine of Cardui. . ; The refinement of style and the realization of comfort A high giade gentleman s shoe, design ed on scientific princples, adapted to the fashion of the hour, made of jealously se lected leather with an an infinite care of detail which amounts to positive genius Divide the price bv the number of months of comfortable wear and vou will acknowledge them cheap: S.
