Hersteain launch was blown up in the harbor of Arica by the Chilian torpedo boat Coiidell, and every man on board was killed. The list of dead in cludes : O. Smith, New York. Win. Hyes, Brooklyn. The Conde.l stole into the haibor of Arica about 7 p. i. There was a heavy fog. The steam launch bad left the Pensa cola on a regular evening trip to the shore, and was making her way back when suddenly those on the in-in-of-war saw the little boat lilted coinpleteij out of the water. The quiet that followed told plainly that the five men aboard the launch had been killed. The -search-light of the Pensacola was brought into pay and the same instant orders were given to lower the boats. Ihe Coiidell was then discovered nlv a short distance awav. The Chilian cruise: had mistaken the launch for an insurgent boat and used a torpedo with deadly effect. there was intense excitement a boa id both vessels for the next tweLty minutes. Signalling con t.uued between the man-of-war and the torpeJo boat for eouie time, and when the situation of atlair became known on the Con- lell her commander dipped hie colors and sent his chief olheer on the Pensacola. It then became Known the explosion of the tor pedo was a stupid blunder on th part of the cruistr. Such apologies as could be oflered w ere made, but the feeling among the comrades of the dead sailors was verv bitter. Commodore Irving, command ant at the Brooklyn navy yard was seen at his residence last nigh and told of the reiorted sinking of toe 1 ensacola s steam lauucii and killing of live of the crew.
