JT ORKUON PACIFIC TIME TAI'.LE. Arrives learm ramenietir.. Fnuht .. U.l:im 1J -"" ... U. I"(m i. Ij a in tourists and the south west. The great ami growing North west ia steadily becoming a inure favored Mecca of tourists and vacation travelers. The Portland Telegram rises with litis remark that since this region can now be reached by so many routes Union Pacific, SfouUiern Pacific, Northern l'ariric or Canadian Pacific and since iU many attractions' are be coming more widely known, its summer visitors are very largely increasing year by year. For Biicfi as can afford to expend the necessary time and money, it is a region well worth v i jiI i: . but in it very hurried trip but l.ltle cf its beauty or a J vantags-s can be seen or appreciated. Atmcet invariably the longer one stay and the more extended and investigating lib travels, the more loth he is to leave, the greater ihe desire to come again. Two or three years ao, an Eastern gentleman, whom the writer knew, rushed across the country, stopped a few hours in Portland, over a night or two on the f-'onnd, hurried home again and wrote a letter to a local payer, in which he spoke rather disparag ingly of the country, the towns, the hotels, and nearly everything. But Hiich cases are rare. Most visitors stay a few days at least, look around with intelligent ob servation and tare, and while they cannot know or understand om great advantages and reouice and undeveloped wealth, yet they go away with favorable impres sions. Many of them, in fact, make more less investments. The Pacific Northwest ia thus becoming known, appreciated. brought nearer to, and bound up .'loser with the other slope, with all regions and people and business of our great land. MA 11 III All E ASD JHYollCE. Tho question of marriage and the reverse process of divorce is too lightly considered the worl I over. The Mihva ikee Sentinel even broadly hints that the institution of marriage is in a position of con siderable danger in all parts oi Christendom which appears to be an opinion rapidly gaining ground on both sides of the Atlantic. The recent F.nglish decision refusing to a husband the personal right to compel his wife, by the restriction of her freedom, to conform to the provisions of her marriage con tract, has caused a good deal of agitation of the subject of divorce in Great Britain, many respect able authorities there taking the ground that if the wife cannot be legally brought back by her husband to her place in the family, it ought logically to follow that he honU have a right to a divorce lor desertion in such case, a period of two to iour years being al lowed in which she might have opportunity to return. As lo this suggestion an able English writer &ay9 : a more serious bio to the ii -stitution of marriage we can hard ly conceive. The real cause of the great number of unuappv marriagea is the lijit-miuded-ness with which m.trr.age is con tracted. And such a law as Lord Shaud suggests would multiply ihe danger oi light-winded marri ages tenfold. A contract which could be diesolved by a two years' desertion, would hardly be re garded a? a permanent contract at all, still less as a most sacred one which it is a shame and disgrace to break through. We should goon have quite a number of people here, as there already are, we be lieve in Germany, who had ex perimented on marriage in various directions, and whose lives were broken up into short sections of close association w ith a wile and other ex-wives, or a husband and other ex husbands. And when once this came to paFs, and came to pass without shame and die grace to tin. se who have so ordered their lives, there would be an end to the sanctity of marriage alto gether. A nisi'ATcii from Astoria says that a sealing achoonor has arrived there from P.ehring sea with 207 sealskins. She left eight vessels in Behring sea, with an aggregate of -PJ72 skins stowed beneath their hatches. Inasmucb as the con vention between the I' ni ted States ami (.ire.it Britain r.llowed thego ernment's lessee only 7500 skins this year it will be seen that the outsiders will get the best of il. These figures, w hich are. of course, incomplete, go far toward demon strating the propriety of a policy of strict exclusion until such time as the rookeries shall lie restored to their former condition. Tin: hibji t o.ibles in Tennessee, which are assuming a serious i s.'cct, grew oi.t of the iifqnitous practice of employing convicts in mines to the detriment of free labor. Oreg'Ui might heed the lesson taught there in. Hard work should not be denied crimi nals in the state penitentiary, but it should be confined to lines of labor that will not interfere with the honest workmen of the conn try. Okk;un takes a second position to no state, even furnishing a little hot weather in the right season, and in spite of a little perspiration we wish to record that this is a great climate.
