Bids were also opened for two

Bids for the construction of the
Marion street sewer were opened
to-day and the contract w ill be
awarded when the council meets.
The insurance adjusters have
been here all week making a re
survey of the city, with the pur
pose of re-rating business risk?, on
account of the temporary scarcity
of water w bile the mill races are
being repaired, and pending the
completion of the new reservoirs.

appropriation, and as the electric
al light plant, which will cost

would have been impracticable to
award them the contract at that-
tigure. They were finally told that
the contract would be given to
them if they would accept it at the
figures proposed by the Bath com-
pady, to which they agreed. The
secretary's object iu giving the
contract to them instead of to the
Bath company is to facilitate the
construction of the ship. He i
entirely satisfied of the ability ol
the Hath Iii in to luiild - the shiii,
but the Bath people themselves
admit that the Crating can do the
work more speedily. It is expected

The attack took place the even
ing of June 1. The Conde.l stole
into the haibor of Arica about 7 p.
i. There was a heavy fog. The
steam launch bad left the Pensa
cola on a regular evening trip to
the shore, and was making her
way back when suddenly those on
the in-in-of-war saw the little boat

that the five men aboard the
launch had been killed. The

brought into pay and the

Secretary Seelev fpent several
hours last night in investigating
the report that one of the steel
launches of the Pensacola bad
been blown up bv the Chilian
vessel Coiidell. The telegrapt
and cable were freely used, and at
midnight the acting secretary
stated that no basis whatever
cculd be discovered fo." the story.
He said he waa satisfied it was en
tirely without foundation.

Sandwich, Mass.
Sandwich, Mass., July 25. A
reception and dinner were given
here to-day to ex-president Cleve
land. A special express train car
rying the governor, members of
tiie executive council, stall' and in
vited guests from Boston stopped
at Buzzard Bay to take Mr. Cleve
land on board. The party arrived
here about 11 o'clock. The recep
tion followed immediately after the
arrival, resting until 12:30. Din
ner was served at 1 o'clock in the

Mexico Does Not Want Them,

July 25. News has been brought
to Mexico by California passengers
that a powerful company is pre
paring colonize a large number of
negroes from Mississippi and Ten
nessee, in Sonara. It is not cred
ited here, as no contract has been
made w ith the government auth
orizing the colonization. A
considerable influx of Chinese
recently tame into the country,
chiefly as workmen on the Te
hiiautepec railroad. They intro
duced a disease hitherto unknown
there. This has caused the im
migration question to be agitated
and tne press manifests marked
dislike to Chinese or negro immi
grants. Oregon to the Front.
Chicago, Jufy 25. Fire in the
Richelieu hotel, the finest in the
city, caused a less of $20,000, most

started on tiie third floor and
quickly spread to the roof of the
building, it lieing a five-story one.

safely, but there was a panic for

Heavy Damages by Fire,
Dallas, Tex., July 25. Fire
broke out in J. B. Cowan & Co.'s
liquor house on Commercial street
early this morning, and spread
verv rapidly to the Benbrook
School Furniture Company, the
Brewerst Storage Company's ware
house and Wolfe & Co.'s cotton
in. Five hundred bales of cotton
in the gin were destroyed, The
estimated loss is $300,000.

Brigadier-General Kautz, the new
lepartment commander, arrived
at the department headquarters
this rooming and assumed com
mand of the department. His
family is now at Tacoma and will
