THE KEPUBLICAK NOMINATION?. General Comment Agrees that I: Is a Strong asi Popnlar Ticket. After the appearance of the Herald yesterday morning, giving the full proceedings of tlie repulili can state convention, the ticket nominated and platform adopted, comments were freely ex pressed. All agreed that the ticket nom inated is n strong ne, and is com posed of popular men who will command the reopeci and support of a good healthy majority in June. The platform, ft is acknowledged, is a bold, sensible document, which speaks out on t lie 'questions of interest to the state in no un certain maimer. Several prom inent democrat? admitted that there are some good men on the ticket whom they do not wish to see defeated. The delegates to the convention from .Albany have returned, and while they were unsuccessful in securing a representation from this city on the ticket, there will I id ill feeling over it, and all will unito in the support of the men nominated. Keeji Tour Eye Open." Under this heading Wednesday's issue of the evening paper, the ex istence of which is known within only a small radius from its sleepy otlice, says : " Few people secim-d to know" that then- was to be an auction of Astoria real estate at 10 o'clock and i o'clock to-day, for when those hours arrived no one was on hand at the place adver tised, and it was probably as well. An Albany man, who bought a conple of lots at a previous auction sale, wrote to a reliable friend at Astoria, asking lor the hom-st facts in referance to the property, and the answer was : " The land might make a crop of d 1 poor bay and in high tide Mould swim a cow." Whether this is t lie correct situation the Oeniocrat dosen't know; bin it v ill at lean pay our citizens to keep tln-ir eyes open."' After the publication ot th" a!ove fabrication Mr. Goodi'tiocirh called at the Democrat ofihv and to him the proprietor said his information was obtained from Major W. t'. C'assell who the scribe claimed had called at tho office and read a letter to him, in the presence oi other.-, setting forth the alleged facts. Mr. C'assell, however, informed Mr.Goodenough that he did not go to the Democrat office or read any letter in their presence. Mr. ('as sel authorized .MrAtioodenoiigh to use the above statement, am! to say further that he went to Astoria and was more than pleased with the property, and will purchase more. The "item was evidently the creation of the Democrat man's fanciful brain, and would not have appeared had "Mr. Gnodenough given him 75 cents worth of ad vertising. It might be a good plan for people to ','keep their eyes open," when dealing with little one-horse newspapers, irresponsi ble, and whose obscurity leaves them no influence to lose. Telephone. I notice in the Evening Demo crat of the 16th inst., a dispatch from John Lawrence, who repre sents the "Sunset Telephone Co.." or better known as the "Bell Tele imone Monopoly," to the effect that should they'use "Allen's tele phones thev would have i law suit on their hands." Now I respect fully state to the good people of Albany that I have been for two years investigating and trying to get a phono that in no wav in fringes on the "Cell Co." I think I have found it, at least it is repre sented to me, which is guaranteed to be in ever way a superior phone, and in no way infringes the Bell patent, and should I put in a telephone exchange and w ill guar antee that those who use it will not be troubled by the Hell Co., and I shall not ask the people to put it in for me cr charge them but little over half as much when it is in. N. II. Allen. Our Streets anil Alley. To ths.Editor or thi Hkralb: An eastern man in looking over the city of Albany is led to inquire into the cause of the untidy condi tion of the streets and alleys. The city should have a decorative union, or some means should be adopted to prevent rubbish from accumulat ing, and to keep the streets and alleys clean. By doing this Albany could be made one of the prettiest cities in Oregon. Tlie Srl Koncl. The committee of Scio citizen? who went to Corvallis to interview the Oregon Pacific officials, returned yesterday. They report that while no definite action ha.-i been taken, theOreiron Pacific jieople are very favorably inclined to the project", and that without doubt the road will be built. It w ill bo a standard gauge and will connect Scio and M tinkers When aecompl.shed it w ill prove of unexampled benefit to Scio. Imp r an LiaesArs easrit. nAlbi y, i j the Ore -t Willa nstt Vi 1 y. An article in the Seattle Tost Intelligencer from Albanv under date of April lfi says : At a meet ing ot the stockholders of the Albany & Astoria Railroad com pany of thi-t city, held recently it was decided to put surveyors in the field to make permanent loca tion of the road, and the company now announces that this will be done without further delay and the rad is to be built from this city U Astoria. The stockholders of the eompanv are among the wealthiest men of Albany, and j they have several banks at their j back. E. .T. Lanning, one of the movers of the road, in an inter-j view concerning the road vester-' day said: "There is $2,000,000 j backing this road. The money is , ready, and the work will be begun and "put through to satisfactory completion." It will open a new era tor Albany, and pdacc 'his city, which is in the center of il-.e great and fertile Willamette Valley, in direct communication with the sea port of Astoria, one thousand men will be put to work on this rond this summe r. This city already enjoys the ad vantages ot the short route to Han Franciscn via the Oregon Pacific railroad and Yaiiuiua Hay. This road is now- being pushed to an eastern connection, and thifi summer it will tap the great stock ranges ot Kastern Oregon and bring that immense busine-s to Albany. All thi has added an impulse and growth to Albany never felt before. New manufacturing es tablishment, business blocks and hundreds ot houses are bring added to the city whicn afford." employment to hundred" of men at fair pricts. While Albany has not "boomed"' it stands foremost among the growing eitie- of Oregon. 4iii The (licgui, rue-Ill-. Mr. SU'vhens superintendent of construction on the Oregon Pacific, was in S.dem vesttrdav, and being seen by a Statesman report i staled that the woik ! track- laying would be commence.! mi the eastward extension ui the Oregon Pacific in about a mouth and then be pushed as rapidly a possible with an extra large force of men through the en tire summer. They expect to be able to cross the summit and be a good many miles beyond, in the neighborhood of the Pes Chuecs river, before winter shall again have put : cessation to the work ot the rail road. Had this winter been no worse than the one before it men could have worked constantly, but the snow in the mountains brought them to an early stop. In tho mountains as far" as the track is laid there is two feet of snow on the level, and higher up where only the grade has been completed there is about three feet. It is slow to melt but the superinten dent gives it as his opinion that they can be at work building the track iu another month. At this rate it will not be long before this big transcontinental road will be running its cars through to an East ern connection. Statesman. Maturul Js. The retorts that come from Astoria of the actual discovery of natural gas near that city, brings to mind that there has been for vcars a belief in the minds of many "that natural gas existed in the region of Spring Hill, across the river from this city, the belief 1k ing predicated upon actual experi ments made a number of years ago. If tho genuine article has been found at Astoria it will revive the experiments in this vicinity, and may develop the article in all its pristine streuath and create another essential qualification for Aloany's prosperity. Every time 1 gave an extra rasp on the E string they howled louder and pitched in afresh.
