wa" passed. The contested elec

taken up. The committee, on
election reported unanimously in

The majority report begins with
a statement of the financial situa

The report says a critical exami
nation ot the subject shows that
agriculture is siiflering chiefly
Horn damaging foreign competi
tion in the home market. The in
crease ol importations ot agri
cultural products since 1885 is
enormous, amounting from $40,
fiOO.OOO to more than $350,000,000
in ibs'.i. With a foreign gram
market under competition, with a
foreign cattle and pork market
depressed and obstructed by
various ruinous measures of
restriction, witli foreign agri
cultural products crowding our
home market your committee have
recommended an increase upon
agricultural products, with a view
to increasing the number of gainful
occupations open to farmers. The
committee says it has recommend
ed the repeal of all laws which im
posed restriction on farmers and
g-ow ers of tobacco. In conclusion
the report said of the advanced
duties on agricultural products
that they are for the most part
articles which this country can
produce to the extent ot our wants.
The increased duty will reduce im
portations so that revenues will
not lie increased and farmers will
hold their own markets.
The minority report, signed by
all tho democratic members of the
committee. Bare the minority eon
temls for the princip'e of just and
equal taxation on all. according to
iheir ability to bear the burden,
while the majority has in this bill
thoroughly- committed itself to the
iHjlicv cf unjust and unequal taxa
tion of the manv lor the benefit ol
the few.
The report critiei-mi the sugar
bounty and protest- against the
gross favoritism and injustice r.f
such policy. McKenna, republi
can, of California, dissents Iroin
the sugar schedule. The bill, he
says, makes a distinction between
t tie sugar industry and other in
dustries. This distinction is in
consistent with the principle on
a hich the bill is framed, and upon
which it can alono be justified.

all-year-round sugar scheme ex

with the saccharine industry,
how ever, considering the shortness
of the season. They make about

Interfering With m Postmaster.
The particulars of the attempt
recently made to prevent James
Finn, the postmsster at Elmwood,
or Snow Creek Tenn., from per
forming the duties of his othce
have been received at the Postoffice
Department. Seven of the twelve
men suspected oi complicity! tne
affair were arrested, and threeof

of the Grand Jury. It is stated
that it was not an uncommon oc
currence for as many as fifteen or
twenty armed men "to attack the
postotfice at night, and pour volley
after volley into the building. The
postmaster's son was crippled for
life bv one of these shots. The
Postoflice Department is informed
that since the arrests were made
Mr. Finn has been unmolested.
