Ill these days of intense mental strain and when intellectual activ ity is rushing along keeping pace with railroads and electricity, it is a relief to a person's philosophi cal organism to turn from such complex questions as protective tariff, politics, and domestic economy to something easy. I noticed in one of our periodicals this statement I have no doubt that it will be a surprise to many. It is this "That hypnotism is the effect of neurosis and that by the contraction of the muscles', the somnambulist is thrown underthe power of tho suggestioner." Now this jumps with the notions I have always held on the subject al though I never could have stated it in language and I will venture to say that more than twenty-five per cent of the adult population of Albanv had never looked at it in this iight before, though it would be the height of absurdity for any one to dispute it and the man t hat would do so would be as "contrary as the man who was drowned, and his body was found floating up stream." The above statement contains a warning to mothers and they in tnrn muet warn their daughters. It is this that they must keep wide awake if there is any kissing done around the front gate, because kissing requires a contraction of the muscles," and if they arc any wise "somnambulistic" they are in danger. E. A. B. Evaporation From Trees. W. II. 11. Murray In tho 1) wton Herald. If any of my readers next June will put the end of a bough of some maplc-trce into a pint bottle and stop the mouth of the bottle with wax, so that no vapor may escape, he win see in a lew moments tne inside ol the I Kittle become clouded, and in about half au hour i-mall drops will begin to form on the glass nnd run downward to the bottom. And at 1 the end of several hours he will discover that he has from 12 to 20 trains of water deposited in the bottle. And all this will have been yielded forth from the two or three leaves on the end of the twig enclosed in the bottle. Now, a maple-tree of eight or ten inches diameter, well formed and growth ful, has on the average 25,000 leaves on it, and it is a safe com putation to sav that such a tree will throw oil' in thespace of every twelve hours 340,000 grains weight of water. Now nn acre will easily contain 000 or 700 such trees, and as the weight of one pint of water is 7,000 grains, troy weight, it will ls found upon calculation that from a single acre of foiest land :;,875 gallons of pure water are thrown off and distributed through the body oi the surrounding atmosphere in every twelve hours. If this seems incredible to you I can assure you that it seems so only because you have no knowl edge of trees." You probably have been accustomed to look upon them as collections of unforceful bulk, whereas they are active creatures, and are forever at work. In one form or another they are always busv and of them it may truly' be said that they not only adorn the landscape, but they rule the atmosphere. They are thoroughly vital formations, and are alw ays in action. They aro as full of sluices and channels as the human bodv is of veins, and the tidal movement goiug on lieneath their bark is one of prodigoua force. The amount of water that their normal condition demand for their circulation is so great that only knowledge can credit it. lint, once apprehended, it becomes in truth a key which unlocks many of the closet doors behind which are concealed tho mysterious chances now going on year after year in our New-Kngland climate. The article savs that Thomas, ot Wisconsin. chairman of the committee on war claims, had denounced the bill as infamous. Thomas said he could prove that a number of the claims on tne bill were claims of persons notably disloyal. After a lengthy debate a resolution of McCainas was agreed to, re-committing the bill with instructions to the com mittee to report it back within two weeks. From the Ccyloa Catholic Messenger. 11 mothers in ccneral shared the nerve exhibited by mothers in Ceylon, trouble would be spared in many a household. "Babies wanted for crocodile bait. Will be returned alive," says "The New Zealand Tablet." "If newspaDers abounded in Cevlon as much as crocodiles do, advertisements- like the foregning would be common in their want columns. As it is, the English hunter has to secure his baby by personal solicitation. He is often successful for Ceylon parents, as a rule, have unbounded confidence in the hun ters and will rent their babies out to be used as crocodile bait for a small consideration. Ceylon croco diles suffer greatly from ennui; they prefer to lie quite still, sooth ed by the sun's rays, and while away their lazy lives in medita tion. But when a dark brown infant with curling toes, sits on a bank and blinks at them they throw off their cloak of laziness and make their preparations for a delicate morsel of Ccvlonese humanity. t iicu me crocoane geis anout half way up the bank, the hunter, concealed behind some reeds, open lire, and the hungry croco dile has his appetite and life taken away at the same time, the baby being iirougtit home sately to its loving mamma.
