strain and when intellectual activ
ity is rushing along keeping pace
with railroads and electricity, it is
a relief to a person's philosophi
cal organism to turn from such
complex questions as protective
tariff, politics, and domestic
economy to something easy. I
noticed in one of our periodicals
this statement I have no doubt
that it will be a surprise to many.
It is this "That hypnotism is the
effect of neurosis and that by the
contraction of the muscles', the
somnambulist is thrown underthe
power of tho suggestioner." Now
this jumps with the notions I have
always held on the subject al
though I never could have stated
it in language and I will venture
to say that more than twenty-five
per cent of the adult population
of Albanv had never looked at it
in this iight before, though it
would be the height of absurdity
for any one to dispute it and the
man t hat would do so would be as
"contrary as the man who was
drowned, and his body was found
floating up stream."
The above statement contains a
warning to mothers and they in
tnrn muet warn their daughters.
It is this that they must keep wide
awake if there is any kissing done
around the front gate, because
kissing requires a contraction of
the muscles," and if they arc any
wise "somnambulistic" they are

In the house to-day Enlee, of
Tennessee, read an article from a
New i ork paper, declaring that a
gigantic job had been discovered
in the Southern war claims bill in
troduced by him. The article
savs that Thomas, ot Wisconsin.
chairman of the committee on war
claims, had denounced the bill as
infamous. Thomas said he could
prove that a number of the claims
on tne bill were claims of persons
notably disloyal. After a lengthy
debate a resolution of McCainas
was agreed to, re-committing the
bill with instructions to the com
mittee to report it back within two
weeks. The bill was placed at the
head of the calendar and the reso
lution was reported to tho house.
Grosvcnor raised the point of
order and the speaker ruled the
resolution out of order. The bill
therefore went back on the cal
endar.

wanted for crocodile bait. Will be

crocodiles do, advertisements- like
the foregning would be common in
their want columns.
As it is, the English hunter has
to secure his baby by personal
solicitation. He is often successful
for Ceylon parents, as a rule, have
unbounded confidence in the hun
ters and will rent their babies out
to be used as crocodile bait for a
small consideration. Ceylon croco
diles suffer greatly from ennui;
they prefer to lie quite still, sooth
ed by the sun's rays, and while
away their lazy lives in medita
tion. But when a dark brown infant
with curling toes, sits on a bank
and blinks at them they throw off
their cloak of laziness and make
their preparations for a delicate
morsel of Ccvlonese humanity.
