CONSTANT ADVANCEMENT Kaiher in dissonance to the action cf Kate Field, who, while under pio,ue at the action of Mor mon v.omon who advocated the Ieculiar tenets of that church more strongly than Kate thought they should, made vigorous attacks upon the future possibility of the sullrage being placed in the hands of her sex, is the action of the old hitherto conservative colleges in fully opening their doors to women. The Washington Tost thinks the most notable fact in the history cf the movement to secure the higher education f women is the recent decision of the authorities of the l.'niversity of Pennsylvania to open to them all its courses upon equal terms with other students. When the question of co-education was first discussed, seven years ago, by the faculty of this same University of Pennsylvania, it received s-ant consideration, and was promptly and summarily dismissed. Never theless, not an argument for the favorable consideration of the pro position can be urged now that was not applicable then. Beyond doubt the triumph of the cau.e of co-edncatiou was really achieved in the freer, less conservative, and more broadly planned institutions of the We-st. In this matter the pioneers were the universities of Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Kansas and California. At the Kast the plan was i'.r.-t adopted in Cornell, and was there found S'i successful that Swarth mow and Columbia soon fuiiowed. F.ven Harvard has fallen in with the movement, though in a sort of compromising way, in ils "annex." The Columbian University did i.ot adopt the principle tiil this year, and now comes lMi:isylv.tni.i as the latest ice; ;!!'. The question o: admitting women to the same ad vantages enjoyed bv men in seem ing the beat and highest education is not to be confounded with the other question as to whether it is advisable or practicable for women to enter upon professional careeis or to adopt other callings which have been lrtherto monopolized by men. That is a matter which each woman will decide for herself, and she will decide it in accordance with her opportunities, her adapta tions, and her special abilities . The admission of women to tne universities is simply a question of general education. Until recently the type, idea and spirit of a uni-vcr-dty wero essentially medheval. The spirit even aflected the cojrte f study pursued. The subjects regarded of predominant import ance hundreds of years ago retained their pre-eminence over subjects of vital interest to modern life. In the same way the medheval idea of woman was retained. In the Middle Aees it was believed that woman's mind was constitutionally unable to cope with the severer and higher lines of thought and study. This idea probably Kate Field would rehabilitate. The ad mission of women to the univer sities marks the death of that idea. In no respect is the progress of our civilization more evident than in the greater fieedom of life, the enlarged facilities for instruction, and the increased opportunities for work which, in our day, are ac corded to women. Tliis evidence of progress is greatly strengthened by th'jir unfettered and equal ad mission to all the advantages of the higher education. The general advance in hnsiness all over the country has l;cn ro-fcrr-.'J to, an-l is a!-nit:el iy a'l. In spite o" rvf.krs ::s a nutiun we are jro;- r:us. Prices may rise farther, but t is not likely that more business will b3 done. The one drawback is that aggregate consumption has not increased. Imports are re duced because prices have in the past six months advanced relative ly faster abroad than at home. But . . i e.cept in iron anu steel, production in manufactures has not increased. In cotton and wool it lias greatly decreased, althoutjn in both lines the advance in price in England is J greater than hein. Sugar is the j one article of foo 1 whose consump tion can be closely measured, and to date at the four leading iorts it is C per cent, less that; last year, although population has grown 3 per cent. It looks on this account for the accumulation of merchan dise stocks in the not distant future. Tin: streets of New York ivere ajrain the scene of a borrowing tiagedv from electric wires. A f il'en telephone wire conveys the , Ritf,.tric current from the light j (,.,. wires, and a horse is killed and consumed, the roaming flesh per vading the atmospli'.te for blocks awav, and several individuals were knocked down and seriously in jured by the curren:.
