The lastest novelty in military in ventions is a vegetable cartridge shell, to which French periodicals are call ing attention. Thia invention would, no doubt, become of great importance should the results that are claimed for the same be confirmed. A French man, M. Biennait, is said to hare found the means of replacing the metel shell of cartridges for one of a vegetable composition, which will be entirely consumed in tiring. This caitridge scarcely weighs one half of a metel cartridge, the price is consider ably less, and its use will do away with all the drawbacks attached to the extraction of the shell after each shot. As the metal shell, however, secures the closing of the cun, M. Biennair hag invented a new contriv ance, which may be easily affiled to eve.y gun at a tmall expense, and which would give to his vegetable shell the same advantage as pobseesed by those now in use. The employ ment of these new cartridges would enable soldiers to carry twice the number now allowed, and thereby the difficult problem of the supply of ammunition iu battle would be greatly simplified, 4'roap Can Lte Prevented. Wewant eveiy mother to know thai croup con be prevented. 1 here is no question about this : as it Las been uone in thousands of cases, and you may depend upon it that when a cnild takes the crouo it i wholly owing to the negligence of its parents. True foup never appears without due and timely warning; u few hours or a day or two tjelere the attack, the child be comes hoarse. This hoarseness is the lirst indicatien of croup, and is a sure sign that croup is to follow, unless promptly and propeily treated. The free use of Chamberlain's Courh Remedy as directed with each bottle, under the heading "To proventcreup," win aiKpei an symptoms el tbe dis ease. This first sign of ceup, hoarse ness, may oe oyeriookea by jeuns motaers or tnese not laminar with the disease. Under such circum stances, or when not properly treated, the hoarseness becomes mere marked. aid tbe child snows shews svmntems of having taken celd, then a peculiar, rrugn :ugn is acveiopea. i-Jven at this 6tas;e Chamberlain's Couirh Kenn edy will prevent the croup, but after toe cougn nas developed tbe ere; p is liable to appear at any moment. The proper way is to keep a bottle of this remedy at nana, it costs but 5vl etnu, and only a few doses, vr at meet net over a third ef a bottle, is required to dispel all symptoms of the disease. Cm you afford te risk ee much fer sj little? There is uet the least danger in giving this remedy in large and frequent desee, which are alwaj s re quired, as it contains no injurious substance. As proof of this fact we refer to John L. Olson, of Dos Moines, whose 18 months-old boy diaak tbe entie conteats of a 50 cent bottle of Chamberlain'6 cough remedy without the lea6t injury. Certainly it made the baby vomit very freely; but after uiKii-g a nap ne would have been glad tohaved.-ank another bottle of the remedy, as he liked it. A similar in stance occurred neai Valley Spnncs, DakoU. Mrs, Mattie Johnson's two year-old daughter, Annie, drank a full bottle of the remedy without injt-ry. This remedy lias been the sole re liance of thousands of mothers for crcup, and especially as a preventive lor nianT yearss, and has never been known to fail. It is also invalnai lc for colds and whooping-cough. For saie oy foenay & Mason. Kid Gloves! Kid UIotcs! I have iust received a full line of kid gloves brand "Our Own." This is a genuine kid glove. GroTer Cleveland Bobs Up With "I Told You So." OBIO IS SOT DEMOCRATIC. The Republicans Have a Majority ii tte Hjtise aid Setate in Iowa Tha El. dim! Elrewfcer. Special to tLe lUmi.n. Wakihsgton, Nov. 7. Ex-Prcs-ideni Cleveland was interviewed last night on the election results. It is evident," said Cleveland, "that tb leaven of tariff reform has at least leavened the whole lump. The west which has suf fered most from the unjust burden of tariff taxation has awakened. The state platforms of both Iowa and Oiiio are abreast of the St. Louis platform on the subject of riff reform. The people have considered and passed judgment. It was for the people to decide. They are now deciding it. It is enough for me to say tney are satisfied with the indications and results ot the election. Tbe voters in Virginia indicate that the south is still faithful to the democracy of Jefferson and Jackson." SOME HOPE IN OHIO. Chicago, (Ohio), Nov. 7. The State Journal (rep.) says the re publican state committee estimates Campbell's plurality over Foraker for governor at from 10,000 to 12, 000. The returns froji nine of the leading counties show that Forakr ran 10,365 behind the ticket. In view of this they claim that the rest of the republican state ticket is elected by an average plurality of 5000. IOWA IS REPl'BLICAN. Chicago, (Ills.) Nov. 7. The Journal (rep.) Des Moines special says while the democrats claim that their entire Iowa state ticket is elected, indications as to the re sult, except for governor, is doubtful. The republicans have 7 majority in the house and 1 in the senate. DEMOCRATIC (JAINS. New York, Nov. 7. The latc-t returns show heavy democratic gains in this state, New Jersey and Virginia. COMMENT ON THE KIXCTIONS. Washingion, Nov. 7. First Assistant Postmaster General Clarksen, on being interviewed concerning the elections, siid: "Tlie invariable results of the year following the presidential election have repeated themselves. There are man- surprises in the republi can states but they come from local causes in every state except Vir ginia." President Harrison has not made any public statement of his views concerning the elections. mist go to jail. StndeHta Who Itefuse to Testify ia a Hazing Case. A report from Madison, Wis., says that in the Municipal Court Judge Keyes gave a decision in the case of A. M. Long and other students ui the State University who refused to tes tify lo the Riley hazing rase. Hp ex amined the case carefully and decided he has the right to compel them to testify or be punished fer contempt of court. If the boys presist io their refusal to tcstif) he will commit them for eon tempt o' court, and as a commit ment of this character is not bailaide, and a writ of habeas corpus would not prevail, a great deal of excite ment exists in university enctes. Some fifteen or twenty etndei- are implicated. Some of them have al ready left and gone to other colleges. Attorney Bashford persists iu his determination not to p remit the hoys to testity, and tbe chances are that the connty jail will soon be over flowing with stedents. The curt adjourned until Wednesday, giving the unwilling students until mat t me to make up their minds whether or not they will testify. Notice to Ovr Fatreas.
